It is time to continue looking at the hymns and songs that had an impact on my spiritual life, and this week I have another of my top three Christmas carols.
Little Drummer Boy
Lyrics
Come they told me Pa rum pum pum pum A new born King to see Pa rum pum pum pum
Our finest gifts we bring Pa rum pum pum pum To lay before the King Pa rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum
So to honor Him Pa rum pum pum pum When we come
Little baby Pa rum pum pum pum I am a poor boy too Pa rum pum pum pum I have no gift to bring Pa rum pum pum pum That’s fit to give our King Pa rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum
Shall I play for you Pa rum pum pum pum On my drum
Mary nodded Pa rum pum pum pum The ox and lamb kept time Pa rum pum pum pum I played my drum for Him Pa rum pum pum pum I played my best for Him Pa rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum
Then He smiled at me Pa rum pum pum pum Me and my drum
A few thoughts …
Here is why I really like this song:
We are invited to come to the King of all Creation. We must realize that we nothing to bring other than what He has given us, so we really have nothing to offer. But …
If we only seek to give our best, our all (even though we may – will – fall short, He only desires that we obey His commands and draw near to Him), Jesus will smile on us. It is His faithfulness that we rely on. We merely let Him call the shots and help us get through.
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
Hebrews 12:1, ESV
The Bible tells us of dozens – hundreds – thousands – who believed in and were faithful to God. Their example and testimony should inspire us and spur us on toward godliness – Christ-likeness.
the Lord appeared to him from far away. I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you.
Jeremiah 31:3, ESV
Just as Israel walked away and God – through disciplining them in the wilderness and then the Exile – was faithful and brought them home, He may discipline us to drive out our sin and make us more like Christ.
Cast your burden on the Lord , and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.
Psalms 55:22, ESV
While we should not only turn to God in times of distress, do not forget how much he wants to help! His wisdom, peace, and strength will get you through.
Do we truly love the Lord our God with all our hearts, souls, minds, and strengths? Maybe I can help with the mind part, at least! This is Daniel M. Klem, apparent poet, reluctant yet passionate Disciple (Peter?), and foolish man attempting to understand theology!
