VerseD: Genesis 1:3

Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

Genesis 1:3, HCSB

God is our source of life, peace, and rest. He is our true light, and He knows how all things work. We can turn to Him, knowing that the Light of the World – Jesus – came and took our darkness and worries on Himself that we may find rest and eternal life.

VerseD: Matthew 11:28

“Come to Me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Matthew 11:28, HCSB

God is our source of life, peace, and rest. In Christ and His commands, we find He is reaching to us by the Holy Spirit and through the Bible and the Church to find this life, peace, and rest.

VerseD: Galatians 6:2

Carry one another’s burdens; in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

Galatians 6:2, HCSB

Knowledge of people and God only carries us so far. Wisdom tells us to live out the love of God by helping each other through all of life’s struggles just as Christ took our sin upon Himself on the cross.

VerseD: Hosea 10:12

Sow righteousness for yourselves and reap faithful love; break up your unplowed ground. It is time to seek the Lord until He comes and sends righteousness on you like the rain.

Hosea 10:12, HCSB

Knowledge of God is not good enough. Wisdom is doing what He has said and faithfully continuing everyday.

VerseD: Psalm 30:5

For His anger lasts only a moment, but His favor, a lifetime. Weeping may spend the night, but there is joy in the morning.

Psalm 30:5, HCSB

Wisdom comes from the knowledge that God is in control, and submitting to Him is the best way to live. This also brings comfort in knowing He has given forgiveness for sin and freedom from fear of wrath through Christ and hope for goodness in eternity with Christ.

VerseD: 1 Peter 5:6

Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that He may exalt you at the proper time

1 Peter 5:6, HCSB

Knowledge of the sinfulness of humanity and the goodness of God should push us to the wisdom of humbly submitting to God and loving Him and others.

VerseD: John 8:32

“You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

John 8:32, HCSB

True knowledge begins in knowing Jesus Christ is the source of truth and knowledge. Wisdom is being set free from the lies of this world by choosing to follow Christ.

VerseD: Psalm 121:2

My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.

Psalm 121:2, HCSB

True knowledge begins with knowing God exists and made everything. Wisdom is trusting Him to help us through this life, following His ways and sharing His truth.

Sermon: The Joy of Being a Disciple – Philippians 4:1-14

I preached again!

I was actually a little excited for this message, and I had a horrible night in terms of sleep. That usually tells me the service will be good, and I and the congregation seem to agree with this, yet again.

As usual, my PowerPoint is available below the video. May you be blessed in hearing on growing in joy as Christ’s disciple and fellow worker.

The Joy of Being a Disciple
Philippians 4:1-14

VerseD: Proverbs 1:7

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and discipline.

Proverbs 1:7, HCSB

Wisdom is fearing consequences and wanting to know the best ways to find good consequences. Knowledge should point us to the good choice, which is always God’s ways.

True knowledge points to God, and we should fear His wrath unless we are wise and follow Him.
