VerseD: Matthew 5:3

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for the kingdom of heaven is theirs.”

Matthew 5:3, CSB

We find hope and faith in knowing we are hopeless on our own, in trying to succeed in life or toward eternal life, but that God has saved us by His grace in Christ.

VerseD: Proverbs 19:17

Kindness to the poor is a loan to the Lord, and he will give a reward to the lender.

Proverbs 19:17, CSB

Peace comes from following God and doing what He has called us to. As we spread His peace to others – both the poor in spirit and the financially poor – we grow in peace knowing we are investing in God’s Kingdom.

VerseD: Psalm 34:18

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.

Psalm 34:18, ESV

God is changing this world for His glory, and He starts with those who need the most help, who are painfully aware of their need for a Savior. We all need Him.

VerseD: Proverbs 19:17

Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed.

Proverbs 19:17, ESV

God is our source of life and love, and this should inspire us to help others. We realize we were poor in spirit and so are they, and especially those who are physically poor. Our reward is eternal life with Christ.

VerseD: John 12:8

‭”For you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have Me.”

John 12:8, HCSB‬

We worship Christ by helping the poor in spirit, the poor in possessions, and the poor in hope and stability, knowing He is the hope of the world who denied Himself for our sake.

VerseD: Proverbs 19:17

‭Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed.

Proverbs‬ ‭19:17‬, ‭ESV‬

Just as our Lord became a poor human to save humanity from sin with His generous love and grace, we show His love and grace to others when we help those in need. We are serving Him as He serves through us, and we will draw others to join us as co-heirs of eternal life with Christ.

VerseD: Matthew 5:3

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

Matthew 5:3, ESV

We must do the difficult thing of admitting we are wretched sinners to a holy God then we will find ourselves lamenting our condition. This is when we are free to receive God’s grace and forgiveness in Christ and find the full eternal freedom He offers.

VerseD: Proverbs 19:17

Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed.

Proverbs 19:17, ESV

Our God gives us good things, especially life and grace. Let us worship Him by giving to others.

VerseD: Matthew 5:3

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

Matthew 5:3, ESV

We see our weakness before God, our utter sinfulness, and it should push us to seek His grace and mercy and find hope in Christ.

Sermon on the Mount study notes – Matthew 6:1-4

I have started a small group series on Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7). I am sharing my notes in case anyone else wants to use them with their group. [Reminder that these are only notes!]

Sermon on the Mount – Part 9

Matthew 5:1-2:
Jesus wants to teach the crowds: Who are they? Jewish disciples: People who understand the
Scriptures (at least to a point). Notice from 7:28 the crowds still came along, but this teaching is for His disciples.

What does “blessed” mean?
Based on the first twelve verses, blessed means realizing our own wretchedness and need for a Savior. In other words, it is becoming/being a Christian.

What was discussed last time?

  • Retaliation
  • Love your enemies
    • “Would you give the Antichrist food and water …?”

Matthew 6:1:
Beware practicing where other people can see? What about “let your light shine that they may see”
(5:16)?

Matthew 6:2-4:
What is Jesus saying?
Beware by making sure your motives are right. Are you seeking glory and people liking you, or are you actually loving others?

  • Compare (“Said of old”):
    • Proverbs 11:24-25 (gives and gets, is refreshed)
    • Proverbs 22:9, 16 (oppresses poor, gives to rich)
    • Proverbs 25:14 (boast of non-gift)
    • Proverbs 28:27 (who gives will not want, hides eyes is cursed)
  • First thing to remember:
    • Proverbs 29:13 – We are all created by God (Made in His image; God gives sight to both)
    • Proverbs 19:17 – We work to serve the Lord (He is kind to the poor in spirit, rewarded by Lord)
      • Love God, love others
  • We are reminded and admonished:
    • Proverbs 3:27-28 – 1 John 3:16-18 – James 2:14-17(, 18-26) (have but don’t give, wicked – faith without works is dead)
      • Ephesians 2:8-9 – Does Paul contradict James?
      • No! Paul explains we are not saved by works, James explains our salvation pushes us to good works. In fact:
  • Philippians 2:12-13
    • Matthew 25:31-46
