VerseD: Psalm 42:1

As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God.

Psalm 42:1, ESV

Our driving passion and desire should be to seek God and His glory, to know Him and make Him known.

VerseD: 1 John 4:7

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.

1 John 4:7, ESV

We don’t want to love others, but the God who came to us to show His love can fill us with His love to then want to love others.

Advent 2022 – Day 17: Matthew 2:7-8

Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.”

Matthew 2:7-8, ESV

At Advent, we look back at why Jesus had to come, that He came, and then that He will come again.

Our sins have stacked up to heaven, deeper and more vile than we could know.

But God was not willing to leave us mired in our sin.

God came to us, born as an infant, weak, physically powerless, yet without sin.

And the first sign given was a star.

Most people miss that our Lord has come to be with us as one of us, and they miss obvious signs, often relying on the truth of the biblical worldview to find truth. But that does not mean they follow the facts to the proper response.

We often still ignore Jesus for our own desires.

Herod is the epitome of pursuing desires over the clear leading of the Lord, showing that we can be willing to lie to continue looking good to others.

We pretend to worship when we hate what the truth is.

Yet, God came to us, showing us that even in our ignorant hatred He comes loving us.

We may make excuses or lie or look in the wrong places, but we should seek the Lord and be willing to give up our desires.

May we seek the Lord who loves us even in our sin.

VerseD: Matthew 6:25

“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?”

Matthew 6:25, ESV

Our desires should not be for the things of this world but the goodness and glory of God. When others see us at peace in a crazy world and content with what we have, they will desire that contentment and peace. They will want the God we carry.

VerseD: Psalm 37:4

Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Psalm 37:4, ESV

Delighting in God means we want Him and what He wants, and He wants the world to come to know Him.

May we seek Him and to make Him known.

VerseD: Galatians 5:24

And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

Galatians 5:24, ESV

Jesus did not want to die, but He did want us more.

We show we love God and others when we give Him our sinful (or merely inconsequential) wants and desires each moment, instead focusing on knowing and sharing His Gospel.

VerseD: Psalm 37:4

Delight yourself in the Lord , and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Psalm 37:4, ESV

As we draw near to God more and more, our desire becomes more and more for God. (But He also likes giving us gifts!)

VerseD: Matthew 6:21

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Matthew 6:21, ESV

Our desires point towards our destination: are we more focused on what we can get or on Who provides for all our needs? Do we strive for wealth or for righteousness?

VerseD: James 1:14

But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.
James 1:14, ESV

Our greatest temptations are for things we like or want most. Watch yourself, with the help of The Helper, and learn self-control.

VerseD: Psalm 19:9-10

the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.
Psalm 19:9‭-‬10, ESV

God’s Word rejuvenates the soul, increases wisdom, and guides us to salvation through Jesus Christ. Seek and trust our Savior above all else.
