The Joyful Life: An Overciew of the Letter to the Philippians

VerseD: Matthew 5:4

Those who mourn are blessed, for they will be comforted.

Matthew 5:4, HCSB

God’s heart is for the oppressed, and those who mourn their sin and the effects of sin find comfort and freedom in Christ who redeems from the oppression of sin.

VerseD: Matthew 5:3

“The poor in spirit are blessed, for the kingdom of heaven is theirs.”

Matthew 5:3, HCSB

God’s heart is for the oppressed, and the poor in spirit are aware of how oppressive sin is. God reaches out by the Holy Spirit to draw us to Christ and find freedom.

VerseD: Psalm 42:11

Why am I so depressed? Why this turmoil within me? Put your hope in God, for I will still praise Him, my Savior and my God.

Psalm 42:11, HCSB

God’s heart is for the oppressed, especially that all are oppressed by sin. When we focus too much on our sin and evil in the world, it is easy to be depressed, but focusing on Christ gives peace and hope.

VerseD: 2 Corinthians 12:9

But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Therefore, I will most gladly boast all the more about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may reside in me.

2 Corinthians 12:9, HCSB

God’s heart is for the oppressed, and when we give ourselves over to His freedom from sin He can even use our weaknesses for good, perhaps as a bridge to others who are oppressed.
