VerseD: Matthew 21:19

And seeing a fig tree by the wayside, he went to it and found nothing on it but only leaves. And he said to it, “May no fruit ever come from you again!” And the fig tree withered at once.

We might try to be trendy for the season or on the right side of history, but we are called to obey Christ above our own desires and societal expectations.

He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you make it a den of robbers.”

We like to think we are dedicating things to God, but are we merely bringing our own will into our walk?

Let us first dedicate our lives to God and the rest will follow.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

We like to think we are basically good or can earn a place in heaven, but it is only by faith in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus that we get there.

We tend toward selfishness, but God has given us the example of sacrificial love and servant-hood towards each other and (as well as for) God.

VerseD: Psalm 23:4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

Psalm 23:4, ESV

It is because of sin – individually and collectively – that we face hard times. Our God has given us His peace and a firm hope to endure and overcome through the cross of Christ.

For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

On our own, we stand condemned. Jesus came to offer redemption from condemnation and hope for salvation and eternal life, if we are humble enough to accept it.

VerseD: 2 Corinthians 12:10

For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

God seems closest to us when we are at our lowest, usually because we are finally willing to listen and notice He has been showing Himself to us the whole time.

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

God has revealed Himself in multiple ways, most especially through the life, death, and resurrection of Christ. Faith is not blind, and it provides hope for the next life.

And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

We like to think we know best, but God calls us to a higher standard of His perfection. We must deny our own ways and take up His.

For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Romans 10:13, ESV

We cannot be saved nor continue faithfully in sanctification if we are not focused on the life, death, resurrection, and sovereignty of Christ.
