God is with us when He is in us. We find God through Jesus, the one who came for us, and then He indwells us by His Holy Spirit.

For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.

I have started a small group series on Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7). I am sharing my notes in case anyone else wants to use them with their group. [Reminder that these are only notes!]
Matthew 5:1-2:
Jesus wants to teach the crowds: Who are they? Jewish disciples: People who understand the
Scriptures (at least to a point). Notice from 7:28 the crowds still came along, but this teaching is for His disciples.
What does “blessed” mean?
Based on the first twelve verses, blessed means realizing our own wretchedness and need for a Savior. In other words, it is becoming/being a Christian.
What was discussed last time?
• Giving to the needy
• Love your neighbor as yourself
o We are serving Christ when we serve others.
Matthew 6:1:
“Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people …”
• Jesus is continuing from this point: why do we fast and pray?
What does Jesus repeat throughout the first half of ch. 6?
“They have received their reward … And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”

Fasting and Prayer is to help us communicate with God, to change us.
“Prayer is for us, not God. He knows what we need, and we need Him.”
Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.
Proverbs 4:23, ESV
Our hearts are deceitful and wicked, so only the Lord of Life can cleanse us. Therefore, protect it by trusting in our God and Savior.
so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.

We faithfully share the Gospel. God uses it in ways we may never know to change hearts and minds to His glory.
Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad.

Daily life can be hard, and a realization of our sin can weigh heavy on the heart and mind.
An encouraging word can change a bad day to a good day, and the Gospel can free us from shame and fear.
Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!

God knows our hearts and minds, yet He still loves us. If we seek Him, He will make us clean and conform us to be like Jesus.

Just as Jesus refuted the Devil when being tempted, we can withstand temptation and sin by reading and knowing God’s Word.
Read your Bible.
And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.

Good renews our heart and mind and gives us His Holy Spirit when we put our faith in the work of the Son.
