Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead
1 Peter 1:3, ESV
When we were still straying from God, He sent His Son to bring us mercy, grace, forgiveness, and restored relationship. The Holy Spirit brings us into the faith that saves us and unites us in the hope of Christ.
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
John 14:26, ESV
We have been horrible, but God came to us to show the way and make us clean. And He has not left us to fend for ourselves, but He now dwells in us to help us and continue to guide us in hope toward eternity.
I don’t normally make a big deal about this particular day of the year. I prefer to dwell on January 9, the day I became a believer in Jesus as my Savior.
What is special of this day?
Well, on October 26, 1983, I was born.
As I turn two score years old, it occurred to me that this year I will have spent two and half times longer as a Christian than not as a Christian. I was 16 years in the spiritual wilderness when I first bent my knee and confessed Jesus as Lord. This coming year, I celebrate 24 years walking as a disciple of Jesus in the Promise.
I may have completed 40 revolutions about our Sun, but I await eternity wrapped in the love of The Son.
And I am thankful for our God’s love and grace, for all the gifts He has given, especially for eternal life. (And a loving, God-fearing wife who helps me grow and stay on the straight-and-narrow. And I await greeting my mother once more in His presence.)
yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will take joy in the God of my salvation.
Blow a trumpet in Zion; sound an alarm on my holy mountain! Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble, for the day of the Lord is coming; it is near
Joel 2:1, ESV
God has predetermined a time when He will end evil in the world, and He has given us His warning as well as salvation through Christ. We have the hope of this promise through His indwelling Spirit.
And he went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people.
Matthew 4:23, ESV
Our God came to us in the person of Jesus to show us how to be righteous, demonstrating His power through miraculous signs and wonders. He heals us spiritually first, with the promise of eternity free from sin and pain.
Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Matthew 6:10, ESV
God came to us to reunite humanity with Himself, to usher in His Kingdom on Earth. He invites us to join Him through faith in Christ, and He empowers us to spread the Kingdom through the indwelling Holy Spirit.
”And now, O Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in you.”
Psalm 39:7, ESV
This life is hard, but our God came to us and called us friends. He died us, then He rise again. He has given us hope for eternity, so we wait for His return.
“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.”
Matthew 7:7, ESV
We like to think we can find our own way, but God has shown us that wisdom in this life and the path to eternal life is only found through faith in the work of Christ and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
And all we need do is seek Him and ask for His grace and forgiveness for having rejected Him.
“For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but my steadfast love shall not depart from you, and my covenant of peace shall not be removed,” says the Lord, who has compassion on you.
Isaiah 54:10, ESV
We make our world chaotic, but God has promised to give us the peace paid for by Christ, filling us with the Holy Spirit to carry that peace into the world.
Do we truly love the Lord our God with all our hearts, souls, minds, and strengths? Maybe I can help with the mind part, at least! This is Daniel M. Klem, apparent poet, reluctant yet passionate Disciple (Peter?), and foolish man attempting to understand theology!
