The Star of Prophecy

We all like to talk about the Magi who came from the east to greet the newborn king of Israel. I wonder how many of us think about this star as a prophetic fulfillment.

Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” (Matthew 2:1–2, ESV)

We are pretty sure that these “wise men” may have been of the school of practitioners trained originally by Daniel while Israel was in exile. It makes so much sense that they would have been looking for such signs. It does make one wonder why they would think to look for a star?

I wonder if the original Hebrew audience of Matthew would have thought about a previous “wise man” who first spoke of this star.

The oracle of Balaam the son of Beor,

the oracle of the man whose eye is opened,

the oracle of him who hears the words of God,

and knows the knowledge of the Most High,

who sees the vision of the Almighty,

falling down with his eyes uncovered:

I see him, but not now;

I behold him, but not near:

a star shall come out of Jacob,

and a scepter shall rise out of Israel (Numbers 24:15–17, ESV)

Some foreigners came to worship a king because of a star they saw rise. A foreign prophet was used by God to prophesy a star that would rise.

The prophecy was made as Israel was approaching the Promised Land. The prophecy was fulfilled when the True Israel was approaching His creation.

The first foreigner joined in trying to kill God’s people. The next foreigners helped avoid the attempt to kill the Son of God (for a time.)

This is a good reminder that Israel struggles (there is a pun here) with knowing who their Lord is, but others see Him for who He is, even of they deny Him.

Let us be wiser than all these, even the wise men from the east and especially those who see truth and deny it.

Let us receive the King of kings who has come to bring us life and peace and is coming again.

Merry Christmas and the Lord’s blessings of eternal life and wisdom on you.

VerseD: Jeremiah 23:5

“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.”

Jeremiah 23:5, ESV

We find joy in Christ, the promised wise King from David who saves us from sin and reigns forever in righteousness.

VerseD: Proverbs 13:20

Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.

Proverbs 13:20, ESV

We are called to walk in the wisdom of God. He empowers us to do so, and He has given us the Scriptures and His Church to help us.

VerseD: Psalm 105:7

He is the Lord our God;
his judgments govern the whole earth.

Psalm 105:7, CSB

God is worthy of all praise, for He is our wise Creator and sovereign King of all things. Trust in the Lord of all Creation, praising His name.

VerseD: Proverbs 3:11-12

My son, do not reject the [d]discipline of the Lord
Or loathe His reproof,
For whom the Lord loves He reproves,
Even as a father corrects the son in whom he delights.

Proverbs 3:11-12, NASB

We face problems and difficulties in this life, many of which come from our own bad decisions. Oftentimes, God uses our circumstances to teach us through consequences. If we are wise, we listen to His Word before we suffer, but He offers His correction through the Word and consequences because He loves us and wants us to grow in wisdom and overcome this world.

VerseD: Proverbs 3:5-7

Trust in the Lord with all your heart
And do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He will make your paths straight.
Do not be wise in your own eyes;
Fear the Lord and turn away from evil.

Proverbs 3:5-7, NASB

Many of the problems we face in this life come from bad decisions we have made, thinking we know better than God or that God might not care enough to bother with us.

We can overcome the problems in this life as we turn our focus on Christ and living according to God’s will through the power of the Holy Spirit. He cares for every part of our lives, and He has given us guidance through His Word and by His Spirit.

VerseD: Proverbs 23:24

The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice; he who fathers a wise son will be glad in him.

Proverbs 23:24, ESV‬

God gives commands according to His nature and our good. He makes us righteous when we believe in His only Son, the Wisdom of God who guides us.

Proverbs and not answering Fools

Jimmy’s thoughts are timely, as our congregation is going through Proverbs on Sunday mornings. It’s also a good reminder in an election year in the good ol’ US of A, especially.

May we learn how to pick our battles and answer wisely.

Daniel

I have been thinking about the topic of not answering a fool.

Proverbs and not answering Fools

VerseD: Daniel 12:3

Those who are wise will shine as bright as the sky, and those who lead many to righteousness will shine like the stars forever.

‭Daniel 12:3, NLT‬

People may know we’re Christians, but they won’t understand our choices and lifestyle. We are called to seek God’s wisdom, and this gives hope for eternity in glory, removing fear of death and anxiety in life.

VerseD: Matthew 7:24

“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”

Matthew 7:24, ESV

We can try to live our own truth, live but the world’s wisdom, or try to please God on our own.

Or we can listen to and obey Jesus.

Pray to hear Jesus and for the strength and wisdom to obey.
