Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

We find hope and strengthened faith when we consider and mourn our utter sinfulness yet in light of Christ’s grace and sacrifice for us.

VerseD: 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort. He comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any kind of affliction, through the comfort we ourselves receive from God.

So much in this world can intimidate us and bring us fear, but God is in control and empowers us by the Holy Spirit to comfort others with the gospel as He has comforted us from our fears of death and struggle.

Matthew 5:4, ESV

As the saying goes, it’s okay to not be okay. In fact, we must realize our sinfulness and that we have wounded God. Not just wounded, but our sins held Jesus to the cross until He died.

When we mourn our sin and its destructive, killing power and offense to God, then we can find comfort and forgiveness in the resurrected Savior.

We mourn our sin, and we are comforted by Christ’s grace and love. We then mourn the sin of the world and carry that grace and love to others.

We are blessed when we realize our wretchedness compared to God, and we mourn the sin the separates us from God – our own sins and the sins of others.

For only then can we seek the blessing of forgiveness and eternal life in Jesus Christ.
