10 Years After Mom Went Home

I got to thinking this past week about my mom. She would have been 63 yesterday.

Lorrie and Tom (mom and pop)

My brother’s 10th anniversary was on Tuesday. They got married in a large room down the hall from mom’s room in the hospital, because we knew, barring some super-amazing miracle, she was going home to Jesus. The hospital staff was amazing, clearing the room and helping with decorating and some of the food. (A celebration of love and life is probably very welcome in that ward!)

10 years later, my brother and his wife have a house, some pets, and two rambunctious and adorable boys (the oldest starting Kindergarten this month.)

I think about that mom got to see me start teaching in Special Education (self-contained autism classroom), but she missed my then going on to get a masters in education and teaching 7th Grade Algebra and later some courses at Grand Canyon University (GCU).

She missed that I not only grew to enjoy coffee but become a barista and business owner.

She missed when I entered paid ministry as a Youth Pastor (and eventually an elder for my congregation) . Add to that the apologetics speaking I routinely do, including a YouTube channel to go with this blog, and eventually achieving a dream of teaching at a college, specifically Christian Worldview at GCU.

There are many things I know she would have loved to see happen in my life that I wish I could share with her.

But I also remember all the conversations had 10 years ago with people who used to “hate God and religion” but had come to faith or at least became more friendly toward Christianity all because of her. That had been her just 14 years before that. (Take it from one who took a lot of her badgering and questions!)

I remember seeing a church filled to standing room only to celebrate her life and share more of those stories.

I like to think there was so much more she could have done in this world, but I’ve talked with hundreds of those lives God used her to change. I think the fact that I have been used to impact hundreds of lives, and I talk about the role she played in that with many of them.

Do I miss my mom?

Absolutely! Is it everyday? Not anymore. Some days are so busy that I barely have time to remember my own needs! (Youth Pastor/Elders, Worldview instructor, and back in seminary.) But most days she is remembered. Even by friends who barely met her or only talked to her on the phone.

Actually, more often than not, I think about the fun we could have in any moment, how she would have responded to a situation, and – most importantly – the fun we’ll have in eternity.

But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. [14] For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-14, ESV

Her legacy definitely continues through many who still praise God because of her life and so many other reasons, and, if not for her, I wouldn’t be here. I thank God for her life and the glory of God that is spread because of her life.

Was she perfect? Absolutely not! But she drew near to God for the last 13 years of her life, and that has made her perfect in Christ’s righteousness.

I long for the day we can praise God together face to face.

VerseD: Hebrews 11:1

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

Hebrews 11:1, ESV

The only source of power, authority, and faithfulness is our Creator God. He has given ample evidence through Creation, life, and Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection to show we can trust Him.

Put your hope in Christ.

VerseD: Psalm 20:7

Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.

Psalm 20:7, ESV

The only true source of power and authority in all of Creation comes from its Creator – God. Trust Him for all your needs ,wants, fears, and hopes.

Answered Prayers from Youth Camp

Firstly, thank you to all who prayed for our youth this past week (July 22-25). 5 churches were represented this week, about 140 students attending.

Here are some quick updates on this week:

Our 2 JH boys
  • One student confessed his pride struggles, and he showed the fruit over the next day we were at camp.
  • Several students committed to actively living their lives for serving Christ.
  • At least four students came forward to receive Christ!
  • James was praying someone would experience a miracle to help their faith grow deeper. He was born color blind (able to see black/white, grays, and brown (typically from red)). After about 30 minutes of praying for his fellow students, he opened his eyes to notice the stage lights looked different. This young man, praying someone else might experience a miracle, had his own! James is no longer color blind!
    • James is not from my congregation, but he was in my cabin. We did not get to bed until after 1:00 am, because he kept discovering new colors and shades
Immediately after the Wednesday night prayer time. James is surrounded by friends praising God.

It is always amazing to see the goodness of God. Please continue to pray for our new believers, students who had major breakthroughs, and for James and his new vision!

Love and grace,

Daniel

Prayer for Another Youth Camp

This is a good summer.

A few churches have come together to send youth on a combined Junior High/High School summer camp, July 22-25.

The theme for this camp is “Breakthrough,” overcoming sin that hinders and doubts that slow our walk. I personally have some youth coming who have discussed needing this.

Please join us in praying for true breakthrough for our preteens and teens this coming week!

VerseD: Hebrews 4:16

Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Hebrews 4:15, ESV

God has prepared a rest for us through Christ, and because of His life, death, and resurrection, we know we can approach God without fear and with hope for that rest from the pains and temptations of this life.

VerseD: Hebrews 4:15

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.

Hebrews 4:15

God has prepared a rest for us through Christ, the one who understands our life and all the problems and temptations we face yet overcame them, even death. Faith in His life, death, and resurrection brings us hope for resurrection and rest from the problems and temptations.

VerseD: Hebrews 4:14

Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.

Hebrews 4:14, ESV

God has prepared a rest for those who believe in Christ, the only one who could live perfectly as a human but also the true God of Creation. We confess our Savior and God who grants rest for our souls through His sacrifice.

VerseD: Hebrews 4:13

And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

Hebrews 4:13, ESV

God has prepared a rest for those who are cleansed by the blood of Christ, and He knows even the stains of sins we are unaware of. With our faith in Christ, as revealed by the Word, we can know we are clean with the hope of rest from fear, shame, and judgment.

VerseD: Hebrews 4:12

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Hebrews 4:12, ESV

God has prepared an eternal rest for us, and we find this rest through the indwelling, Spirit-inspired Word of God which transforms us and guides us in all truth.
