Simple Thoughts on Current Events

Howdy!

The world is crazy. (I know. I should warned about spoilers.)

The first week of June 2025 has proven to be interesting. Here are some thoughts:

Michael Tait

In January, Michael Tait suddenly announced he was stepping down as front man of the band Newsboys. On June 4, Julie Roys released her investigations of his abusing cocaine and alcohol with various 22-year-old men whom he also inappropriately touched between the years of 2004-2014, possibly more being involved. On June 10, Tait put out a confession owning to the truth of the allegations.

My Take

The whole thing is horrible. His confession looks legitimate and repentant, but we still need time to know for sure.

Firstly, we need to keep Tait and the Newsboys band members in our prayers, as well as his victims and all of their families and friends.

Secondly, let us remember that “but for the grace of God, there go I.” In other words, let’s not cast major judgment and say so many “holier-than-thou” statements like “I always thought/knew …” or “this just goes to show …” This is an example of someone falling into temptation. There are several prominent Christians (in entertainment or otherwise) who remain faithful and humble. There are many fakes out there.

If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. Christ died and returned to life for this: that he might be Lord over both the dead and the living. But you, why do you judge your brother or sister? Or you, why do you despise your brother or sister? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God.

Romans 14:8-10, CSB

Instead of the I-knew-it’s and This-goes-to-show’s, let’s focus on proclaiming truth and loving the lost and hurting. To do otherwise is to engage in gossip and judgmentalism. If someone gets rid of all of their Newsboys stuff, that’s up to them. If they only listen to or keep pre-Tait Newsboys stuff, that’s up to them. If they choose to continue listening to all Newsboys stuff, that’s … also up to them.

Live for Christ and proclaim truth. Deal with this issue in a godly manner with those who ask, and then leave it at that.

Immigration Protests/Riots & Trump

This last week we saw several cities dealing with anti-ICE (Immigration & Customs Enforcement) protests. People have been upset with how the Trump administration has been handling illegal immigration, and the protests began in major cities, resulting in Trump sending in the National Guard and Marines to LA. To no one’s surprise, this has caused controversy.

My Take

I do believe President Trump and his administration have been mishandling immigration. (I think every administration of the past 40 years at least have been mishandling immigration.) I do believe there is good reason for protests against how immigration is handled.

At the same time, damaging property, throwing molotov cocktails and stones/bricks, and attacking people is wrong. The mayor and governor not even trying to stop them is wrong. Complaining about the president stepping in when the city has become a war zone due to inaction is wrong.

Pursue the well-being of the city I have deported you to. Pray to the Lord on its behalf, for when it thrives, you will thrive.” For this is what the Lord of Armies, the God of Israel, says: “Don’t let your prophets who are among you and your diviners deceive you, and don’t listen to the dreams you elicit from them, for they are prophesying falsely to you in my name. I have not sent them.” This is the Lord’s declaration.

Jeremiah 29:7-9, CSB

Let everyone submit to the governing authorities, since there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are instituted by God. So then, the one who resists the authority is opposing God’s command, and those who oppose it will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Do you want to be unafraid of the one in authority? Do what is good, and you will have its approval. For it is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, because it does not carry the sword for no reason. For it is God’s servant, an avenger that brings wrath on the one who does wrong.

Romans 13:1-4, CSB

To be fair to immigrants, the US system is severely messed up, and the current administration is not helping matters. However, violence is not the answer, especially when people who had nothing to do with the issue get hurt either physically or financially. That is terrorism, not protest.

When another country’s flag is flown, especially with violence, that is not protesting; that is invasion, insurrection, and a statement of war.

This is a very complex issue, and both sides are currently over-simplifying and villifying. As Christians, we should not do either.

If all immigrants are the problem, you are a bigot.

If the president does nothing good, you are hateful.

If you see violence as a “mostly peaceful protest,” or you think the current administration is doing nothing wrong, you are deceived.

We are called to obey laws AND fight against injustice. Both sides have injustice at this time.

Humans are not illegal, true, but only humans can do illegal things. Let us be careful how we handle our fellow humans and stop villifying our fellow image bearers.

Talk about these matters, but be civil, be Christlike, and be willing to actually listen to each other.

If possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. — Romans 12:18, CSB

VerseD: Matthew 7:1-2

‭“Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you.”

Matthew‬ ‭7:1‭-‬2‬, ‭ESV‬

Life can be hard, so let’s not make it harder on each other with unrighteous, hypocritical judging. Instead, let’s give the same forgiveness our Lord gives us, helping each other be better and grow in Christ.

Sermon on the Mount study notes: Matthew 7:1-6

I have started a small group series on Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7). I am sharing my notes in case anyone else wants to use them with their group. [Reminder that these are only notes!]

Sermon on the Mount – Part 12

Matthew 5:1-2:
Jesus wants to teach the crowds: Who are they? Jewish disciples: People who understand the
Scriptures (at least to a point). Notice from 7:28 the crowds still came along, but this teaching is for His disciples.

What does “blessed” mean?
Based on the first twelve verses, blessed means realizing our own wretchedness and need for a Savior. In other words, it is becoming/being a Christian.

What was discussed last time?

• Don’t worry.
• Trust God.

Matthew 7:1:
Cut and dry, right? Don’t judge.

  • Jesus always takes us deeper.

Matthew 7:2-4:
DISCUSS!

  • Not just “don’t be a hypocrite.”
  • Getting stuck on others’ sins:
    • We are at least as guilty of that sin
    • We are unaware of our particular sin
    • We are covering for our own sin
    • We are avoiding our own sin
    • We are seeking power over others
      • See also: Cult leaders
  • When we judge others, we invite the same judgment. (Be ready: 1 Peter 3:13-17)

Matthew 7:5-6:
Not hypocrisy, but helping from experience.

  • v. 5: We are to judge rightly – discernment.
    • As revealed from God’s Word:
      • 2 Timothy 3:16-17
      • Hebrews 4:12-13
      • They are judged by God as revealed in Scripture (The Way of the Master – Ray Comfort)
    • As demonstrated by Paul:
      • Ephesians 3:7-13
      • 1 Corinthians 15:9-11
  • v. 6: What?!
    • What do dogs do with things?
      • “Ooh! Toy/Substitute for an animal!”
        • Tear it to shreds (make excuses, shift the blame: see legalistic Christians … and most others)
        • Make a bed out of it (become more hypocritical through claiming better righteousness: see Critical Race Theory)
        • Get it a slobbery, fecal mess (like shredding and bedding, but distorting the meaning: see liberal Christianity)
    • What do pigs do with things?
      • Live in a sty.
        • Roll in/on it (Try to discredit it while appearing to be better: see many atheists or NAR/Prosperity Preachers)
        • Eat literally everything (claim all truths are equal, except conservative Christianity: see New Age and Postmodernism)
    • Proverbs 26:11; 2 Peter 2
    • Mark 6:10-11

We are to judge with God’s standard (The Bible – literally “canon” = “standard” or “ruler”): we start with ourselves, then we help the world. (Matthew 28:18-20)

VerseD: James 1:19

Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger

James 1:19, ESV

Do not assume you know what a person is thinking or where they are coming from. Everyone is more willing to talk when we are willing to hear.

Just as God hears His people, even though He sees our sin.

Matthew 7:1-2

“Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you.”
Matthew 7:1‭-‬2, ESV

Jesus never said “never judge.” He warned to use good judgment, but realize you invite judgment from others.

Judge yourself first according to Scripture, then help others do the same.

VerseD: Luke 6:37

“Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven;
Luke 6:37, ESV

This is not a command against judging others. Jesus is telling us to use wise judgment, grounded in God’s Word, and to show grace and forgiveness while calling out sin, but also to be open to sin in our own life being called out.

VerseD: 1 Samuel 16:7

But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”
1 Samuel 16:7, ESV

“Do not judge a book by its cover.”

Only God can judge a person’s heart. You may not know their circumstances or motivations. Therefore, treat all people the same, with God’s love and with wisdom.

“Treat others how you want to be treated.”

Splitting Hairs

There are no two ways about it. Wisdom is good. Find some at Proverbial Thought!

Recently, I have heard a lot of interesting views on things.

One of the topics I have heard a lot over is hair.

First, I saw some videos on YouTube in which men with long hair and women with short hair were called sinners.

Then I had a conversation with someone who said men with long hair are not Christians.

Then I read a blog entry that said women with short hair will take down society.

Finally, I had a conversation with someone who just wanted to know about proper hair length for men and women.

A lot of this is based on 1 Corinthians 11:

Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man nor man of woman; for as woman was made from man, so man is now born of woman. And all things are from God. Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a wife to pray to God with her head uncovered? Does not nature itself teach you that if a man wears long hair it is a disgrace for him, but if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For her hair is given to her for a covering.
vv. 11-15, ESV

I only find this so interesting knowing of passages such as Numbers 6, which Paul would have known well:

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, When either a man or a woman makes a special vow, the vow of a Nazirite, to separate himself to the Lord, he shall separate himself from wine and strong drink. He shall drink no vinegar made from wine or strong drink and shall not drink any juice of grapes or eat grapes, fresh or dried. All the days of his separation he shall eat nothing that is produced by the grapevine, not even the seeds or the skins.

All the days of his vow of separation, no razor shall touch his head. Until the time is completed for which he separates himself to the Lord, he shall be holy. He shall let the locks of hair of his head grow long.
vv. 1-5

We all have heard about Samson. (Judges 13-16. Who, honestly, gives some credence to men keeping their hair short!)

There is evidence Paul himself took a Nazirite vow (see Acts 18:18).

Now, I am not saying all of the people who said these things are necessarily coming from a judgmental frame of mind. Most, if not all, may simply be trying to approach life from a biblical point.

However, how many times have we gotten caught up in particulars only to push people away? Whether it be hair, drinking, smoking, clothes, tattoos/piercings, end of life plans, church paint/carpet colors, political affiliation, or music choice, we could certainly show more grace to each other.

If anyone is inclined to be contentious, we have no such practice, nor do the churches of God.
1 Corinthians 11:16

But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. The saying is trustworthy, and I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works. These things are excellent and profitable for people. But avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels about the law, for they are unprofitable and worthless. As for a person who stirs up division, after warning him once and then twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned.
Titus 3:4-11

_

charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine, nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies, which promote speculations rather than the stewardship from God that is by faith. The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. Certain persons, by swerving from these, have wandered away into vain discussion, desiring to be teachers of the law, without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make confident assertions.

Now we know that the law is good, if one uses it lawfully, understanding this, that the law is not laid down for the just but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who strike their fathers and mothers, for murderers, the sexually immoral, men who practice homosexuality, enslavers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine, in accordance with the gospel of the glory of the blessed God with which I have been entrusted.
1 Timothy 1:3-11

_

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
Ephesians 4:29

Weekend Words & Sunday Stanzas – 08/24/2014

Look past the surface level of worldly wisdom. Find some true wisdom through the thoughts at Proverbial Thought!

You may remember this past week when I shared “Some Final Thoughts About Momma Klem” some of the passages that my mom and I have tried to live by:

But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.
1 Samuel 16:7, ESV

Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge.
James 4:11, ESV

Some of the best people in the world, by our standards, may in truth be the worst of humanity, by God’s standards.

Some of the seeming hard-as-nails people may in truth be those with a heart of gold.

In the deepest meaning of truth, only those who know Christ truly have a good heart, for He indwells us, and His grace and love shine through us.
