VerseD: Deuteronomy 6:4

“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.”

From a Suggested Reading: The Need to See Scars

Anthony Baker's avatarThe Recovering Legalist

As I was sitting here in my study and reading a book that a church member gave me, I came across something I had to share…because I totally agree.

In his book Take the Dimness of My Soul Away, William A Ritter shares several sermons he delivered over the years following the suicide of his son. At the beginning of the third chapter entitled “Making It,” Ritter wrote something that mirrors my own philosophy of pastoral ministry.

When I read it just a couple of minutes ago, I knew I had to share it with you.

“We who follow Jesus need not hide our hurts. Not all wounds need covering. Even in the pulpit. Especially in the pulpit. People need to know that even preachers have been through some wars and accumulated some scars. But they also need to know where and how healing is taking place.” p. 38

VerseD: James 4:17

So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.
James 4:17, ESV

Are you loving your neighbor?

Do you simply pass by the person in need or simply respond “I’ll pray for you” instead of helping when able?

Jesus was inconvenienced by the cross. We can at least change a tire, listen to a sad story, and be a little late sometimes.

To not may be sin.

VerseD: Philippians 2:5

Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus
Philippians 2:5, ESV

We were made to imitate God, who is loving, compassionate, and willing to serve and help anyone.

VerseD: Proverbs 15:31

The ear that listens to life-giving reproof will dwell among the wise.

VerseD: Luke 9:24

For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.
Luke 9:24, ESV

To save your soul, you must realize your life does not belong to you. Realizing God is in control of your life and letting Him will grant you peace and eternal life.

VerseD: Galatians 5:25

If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.
Galatians 5:25, ESV

Living by the Spirit means we will grow in love and self-control (along with all the fruit of the Spirit), serving others and glorifying Christ in all things.

VerseD: Matthew 22:37-39

And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
Matthew 22:37‭-‬39, ESV

What are God’s expectations for all people?

Love God with every bit of yourself, an love other people as if they are yourself.

VerseD: Colossians 3:12

Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience,
Colossians 3:12, ESV

As a Christian, are you known for your compassion, kindness, humility, patience, and your ability to not be easily offended or thought stupid/ ignorant/gullible/foolish?

All of these can be hard, but especially in this current world we struggle with meekness.
