VerseD: James 1:12

Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.

James 1:12, ESV

When we realize that in Christ our identity is a loved child of the Most High King, we can endure and overcome anything in this life for His sake and by His power.

VerseD: John 1:5

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

John 1:5, ESV

Our sin has darkened the light of God in this world, but He stepped into this world to overcome and wash away our sin and darkness.

VerseD: Psalm 23:4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

Psalm 23:4, ESV

It is because of sin – individually and collectively – that we face hard times. Our God has given us His peace and a firm hope to endure and overcome through the cross of Christ.

Trust our Creator and His promises rather than merely following our own knowledge and wisdom.

VerseD: Romans 8:31

What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

Romans 8:31, ESV

God has redeemed our lives, therefore no one should be able to intimidate or threaten us with fear of persecution or death. We know they will get what they deserve or join us in eternity with Christ.

VerseD: Romans 12:21

Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Romans 12:21, ESV

Everything we do apart from Christ is evil, yet He came to overcome our evil with His righteousness by His death.

May we live like our Lord and Savior, loving others sacrificially and with goodness.

VerseD: Galatians 5:16

But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

VerseD: Isaiah 41:10

Isaiah 41:10, ESV

The world and the devil want to hold us back and lead us from righteousness, but, even if we stumble, God is there to help us overcome and thrive.

Advent 2022 – Day 20: Matthew 2:19-20

But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, “Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child’s life are dead.”

Matthew 2:19-20, ESV

At Advent, we look back at why Jesus had to come, that He came, and then that He will come again.

Jesus came to live amongst us, bringing danger to His earthly family.

The promises we get from God are that those of the world will hate us for following Him, so it is dangerous to follow Christ. (John 15:18-25)

We still see that God protects His own.

The one who tried to kill fellow image-bearers in an attempt to destroy God had died, and God told Jesus’ family they could safely return home.

Likewise, we know that we face dangers from those in this world who want to do the same as Herod, and sometimes this includes our own thoughts and actions.

Yet, God came to us, defeating the power of Satan and this world, showing He still protects His own.

So we also know that this world is not our home, and Christ has defeated the power that still influences our lives. (John 16:33)

Christ has shown us how to live and trust and love in the midst of danger.

He did not give in, but He made a way for us to join Him in our eternal home.

May we seek the Lord who has saved us from sin and protects us from the ultimate effects of sin.

VerseD: Romans 12:21

Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Romans 12:21, ESV

We know God is in control and allowing evil people to build up their wickedness (and wait for all who will come to Him), so, by the power of the Holy Spirit, we endure the evil in this world and work toward combating evil with good works and Christ’s love.
