We can know the words of the Old Testament Part 3

Review: Last two lessons we saw a total of nine reasons why we can know the original words of the Old Testament

  • Reason #1: God’s Word says the Word of God will endure forever
  • Reason #2: The Old Testament was written down.
  • Reason #3: Temple officials were intentional in checking the manuscripts
  • Reason #4: Masora Finalis
  • Reason #5: Jesus affirms the words of the Scriptures will endure
  • Reason #6: Masora Parva
  • Reason #7: Dead Sea Scroll
  • Reason #8: Oldest Hebrew Witness
  • Reason #9: Other language translations

Purpose: In this session we shall consider more reasons why we can believe why we can know the actual words of the Old Testament so that we will have faith in God’s Word being God’s Word.

VerseD: Isaiah 54:17

“no weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed, and you shall refute every tongue that rises against you in judgment. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord and their vindication from me, declares the Lord.”
Isaiah 54:17, ESV

As Christians, we have the truth. No argument can defeat God’s truth.

And even if people try to hurt or kill us, we still have eternal life waiting for us in Christ.

VerseD: 2 Timothy 1:7

for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
2 Timothy 1:7, ESV

We should not shrink back from sharing God’s truth with a rebellious, fallen world. We have the power to obey Christ’s commands and love by the Holy Spirit.

Ken Ham vs. the SES Apologetic

This is a little on the long side, but it explains parts of apologetics very well, especially coming from a Young Earth perspective.

I wanted to spend a few moments interacting with this article over at the Southern Evangelical Seminary blog,

Does Ken Ham’s Defense Biblical Authority Lead to Biblical Skepticism?

It’s an article written by my past internet foil, Adam Tucker. He has provided us with a helpful treatise expaining the methodology behind how SES teaches apologetic engagement. He excellently contrasts a classical/Thomist approach to apologetics from a presuppositional/Bible-based one that I believe lends us insight for sharpening our apologetic focus.

VerseD: Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Psalm 46:1, ESV

Our God can handle anything, because He is ultimately in control of everything.

Fall in His arms and trust His strength in every thing that comes your way.

The only thought I would add to Wally’s commentary is that it is good for pastors to know and meet with other leaders, for accountability and encouragement. Both are helpful and needed for Christ’s Church. Otherwise, here is his continuation of the series on the Seven Churches of Revelation.

Daniel

VerseD: Proverbs 16:18

Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.
Proverbs 16:18, ESV

Do not think you can do everything on your own. Sometimes we all need help.

Especially in matters of eternity. We all need Christ to escape The Fall.

VerseD: Jeremiah 31:3

the Lord appeared to him from far away. I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore, I have continued to extend faithful love to you.
Jeremiah 31:3, CSB

Though we all stray from God, He calls out in love to come home. Today, He uses the Church, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to call to this fallen world.

Be His voice.
