VerseD: Matthew 5:48

You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
Matthew 5:48, ESV

One way to understand this is “to perform your function or purpose.”

Therefore, as God is sovereign over all and sustains all with power, love, and grace, we should be striving outdo each other in love and share the Gospel to the glory of God.

VerseD: 3 John 1:11

Beloved, do not imitate evil but imitate good. Whoever does good is from God; whoever does evil has not seen God.
3 John 1:11, ESV

We are not to copy the world. We are separate, different, called to better.

Be radical. Love everyone. Do good for all people, in Christ’s name.

VerseD: 1 Peter 5:6

Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you
1 Peter 5:6, ESV

Our Great Shepherd will give us a crown of glory (eternal life in glorified bodies) for humbly serving Him.

Do not demand authority or expect earthly rewards in this life. Merely lead others to the Shepherd King, Jesus, as a willing servant.

VerseD: Hosea 6:6

For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.
Hosea 6:6, ESV

The Lord is looking for faithful servants and sons (and daughters!), those who sacrifice of themselves for the sake of Christ through whom we find our adoption – not merely giving out of their abundance, who give out of love, not obligation.

VerseD: Daniel 12:3

And those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky above; and those who turn many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever.
Daniel 12:3, ESV

Because of Christ’s good work, we now can be like a city on a hill, letting our good works shine brightly to the glory of the Father.

VerseD: Isaiah 6:8

And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here I am! Send me.”
Isaiah 6:8, ESV

Jesus said to count the cost of following Him (Luke 14:25-33). Becoming a Christian means accepting the call to go and share God’s Word (Matthew 28:18-20).

VerseD: Colossians 3:23-24

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.
Colossians 3:23‭-‬24, ESV

Work is hard.

Nobody at church gets along or understands.

The kids (or parents) will not listen.

Nobody plays fair.

The government is corrupt.

You are not trying to please them or work for them!

You serve Christ. Reflect Him, not your world.

Versed: Philippians 2:13

for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
Philippians 2:13, ESV

We follow Christ’s example of humility and obedience to be a part of God’s good plan, and He helps us with His Holy Spirit.

VerseD: John 15:5

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
John 15:5, ESV

All our deeds and works are tainted by our sin. We only truly do good works when we are living in the power and grace of Christ.

VerseD: 1 Peter 4:10

As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace:
1 Peter 4:10, ESV

We could say “blessed to bless,” but it goes deeper. If you have opportunity, serve others and share the Gospel, even out of meager offerings and skill.
