Message Series: Malachi 3:16-18

It is about time for a short message series.

For the past few weeks and over the next couple of months, I will upload short messages based on the book of Malachi. It will probably be eight total and based on the section divisions in the English Standard Version of the Bible.

No special titles. Just taking a quick look at what was said.

So read along with me, and let us study what Malachi said to his people about 2,400 years ago.

Malachi 3:16-18

Remember that Malachi literally means “my messenger”, so he is God’s messenger, as all the Prophets were.

Chapter 1 was about God’s love for His covenant people – those who obey and love Him – versus those who refuse to listen to Him. The priests offered lame, sick, and injured animals as sacrifices, basically taking the Lord’s name in vain by calling it acceptable even though they were worthless gifts.

Chapter 2 can be called the passage about “bovine scatology”, because priests then (and many now) led people astray with false teachings. So God rebuked them and showed they are outside of the covenant.

Chapter 2 finishes with God rebuking not only the priests but any who practice what God said not to, and leads into chapter 3 in which God calls out those who call evil good and vice versa (which leads to His eventual judgment!)

Chapter 3 is largely about stealing from God, which was equated to not sharing the Gospel or giving the Church (and thus God) a bad name so that others want nothing to do with Jesus. It is like robbing God of souls.

Now, on to discuss the wrath of God:

16 Then those who feared the Lord spoke with one another. The Lord paid attention and heard them, and a book of remembrance was written before him of those who feared the Lord and esteemed his name. 17 “They shall be mine, says the Lord of hosts, in the day when I make up my treasured possession, and I will spare them as a man spares his son who serves him. 18 Then once more you shall see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between one who serves God and one who does not serve him.

  • God compares the godless with the godly.
    • Contrast v. 15 with vv. 16-18
  • The deeds of the righteous and unrighteous will be easily seen.
    • This was made after most COVID-19 restrictions were being lifted, but riots are erupting around the USA due to police brutality. Minneapolis (the epicenter, based on the death of George Floyd – a black man who did not deserve the treatment he received) has been literally burning.
    • Seeking revenge is not good, nor wishing/inflicting harm on others as retribution.
      • Romans 12:19; Deuteronomy 32:35
  • We need to remember we are not fighting people, but powers, principalities, and authorities: a spiritual war. (Ephesians 6:12)
    • It is proper to be angry, but we must not let our anger lead to sinful acts. (Ephesians 4:26)
    • And we need to remember that we are all sinners in need of grace. (Romans 3:23)
  • God’s got this and hears our prayers and laments:
    • Revelation 5:8; 8:1-5
  • God will avenge – not just us, but His reputation:
    • Revelation 20-21
      • 20:12, 15

VerseD: Isaiah 41:13

For I, the Lord your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, “Fear not, I am the one who helps you.”
Isaiah 41:13, ESV

God is nearest the lowly, it is said. Yet, God is omnipresent – everywhere. We are more aware of Him when at our lowest.
That is when we get ourselves out of the way and listen to the One comforting us and guiding us in truth.

VerseD: Psalm 55:22

Cast your burden on the Lord , and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.
Psalm 55:22, ESV

Our righteousness is in Christ, our Rock and foundation. Whatever comes our way, He keeps us steady and strong in His mighty strength and faithfulness.
Rest in Him.

VerseD: Matthew 6:25

“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?”
Matthew 6:25, ESV

God wants to take care of us. Not like prosperity preachers teach, but in meeting our daily needs. We need less than we realize, and God knows best what we need.
Seek Him.

Guest Post: The “Prosperity Gospel” Vs. God’s Gospel

Yep.

Note: This is a guest post since presently I am busy today teaching class online for seminary students overseas.  This is by Robert Chamberlain.  His blog be found here, here and here!  Yes he blogs in three places!  Go check out his page and give his blogs a follow!

If I was to ask you what the gospel is, what would you say? It’s good news yes, but what is the good news of the gospel? If you say that to come to Jesus you will be healthy, wealthy and happy; that is not the Biblical gospel, it is a false teaching.

VerseD: Psalm 119:2

Blessed are those who keep his testimonies, who seek him with their whole heart
Psalm 119:2, ESV

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” John 14:15
“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” Matthew 16:24

VerseD: John 15:13

Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.
John 15:13, ESV

God set the example. Jesus called us friends if we follow Him, and that means sacrifice and pointing people to the truth of our need for salvation.

Memorial Day in my 30s

I have known some mothers like that mentioned here in my time. Having not served myself, but knowing many who have, I have seen the other side discussed here. I have sat with soldiers/vets who have lost friends, and with mothers, brothers, and sisters, who have lost family. It is nice to see a veteran who thinks of those back home. (Even if it takes a little while. 😉 ) Too many people do not think about any of this at all, even on Memorial Day.

For Americans today is Memorial Day.  Its a national holiday where America have the day off to remember those who served in the military that have died in the line of duty.  Some of you guys know that I was at one time an American Marine.

VerseD: Luke 9:23-24

And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.”
Luke 9:23‭-‬24, ESV

Do not think you life will not change following Christ. We are expected to conform to His image and live lives of sacrifice.

Review – A Matter of Days – Chapter 18

I admit to growing weary of hearing people attack my beliefs as being fallacious while using utterly fallacious argumentation in the process.
Yet, growing weary of hearing it is not the same as growing weary of teaching in the face of it! I could keep going for … billions of years.

IMG_4899Physical Reality Breaks through the Fog

Ross jumps headfirst into both the sweeping generalization fallacy and the strawman fallacy to open ch 18

Many young-creationist leaders declare that their view is reality and that virtually all of what has been discovered in the hard sciences is not what scientists think it is. This apparent antiscience position obscures physical reality in a dense fog

You will notice how Ross equivocates (again) the modern academic paradigm (MAP) with “hard science” and how the MAP is authoritative for him and his ilk.

Virtually all of what has been discovered” ?!?!?!? Ross literally said that biblical creationists have ignored virtually all of what has been discovered. Ross has virtually ignored all of what God has revealed in his word about the global flood, what Jesus said in Mark 10:6, and what Moses etched in stone from the voice of the Almighty in Exodus 20…
