Fighting Over Dad

There is nothing to fight over: find wisdom over at Proverbial Thought.

You may remember last year I wrote a series of posts about my puppy dog (the last one found here).

Soon after the New Year, we got another little guy, a little brother for our pup, if you will.

These two have an interesting way of greeting me when I come home:

When I enter the house, they start biting each other.

I could not help but think about how often we see this in churches: we begin arguing with each other, biting each other with our words.

We can get so caught up in our squabbles that we can miss out on our Father greeting us in His house, through His Holy Spirit who regenerates our hearts and pushes us to love and good works.

May we get over ourselves and put on the righteousness of Christ!

Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work, to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people. For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another. But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. The saying is trustworthy, and I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works. These things are excellent and profitable for people.
Titus 3:1-8, ESV

IT IS MOTHERS’ DAY! HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!

Remember, Proverbs 31 was written as advice from a mother, so go find some godly, maternal wisdom at Proverbial Thought!

The poem today is also fitting, as it talks about walking the right way. Parents are supposed to help guide their children, and that is exactly what God wishes to do with all of those adopted through the blood of His Son, Jesus Christ.

                    just off the path

they call it the straight and narrow

but just how well can we follow

what if in all of our attempts

just to the right or the left

is where it turns out we have

been in relation to the path

what if while we have been talking

with those with whom we are walking

only to come to realize

that our half truths are still lies

not really following Christ

but being just to the left or right

instead of walking just off the path

we should have our thoughts recast

we should line up our lives

with His loving heart and mind

to remain on the path of God

we must watch where our minds trod

we must study the scriptures

and look to our Savior

break bread with one another

and help our needy brothers

we need to pray continually

and praise our God Almighty

to stay on the Path of our King

we need to give Him everything

Seeing Through Mom’s Eyes

Wisdom calls to you, and some of our thoughts on her words can be found at Proverbial Thought!

Let this be a reminder to all of you (who may have forgotten. I will keep your secret. You are so welcome!) that Mother’s Day is this Sunday.

Let us remember the 5th  Commandment: “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.” (Exodus 20:12, ESV)

We like to celebrate a lot of things in our world, and in May and June we celebrate parents (or surrogate parents through adoption or other loving adults. My wife and I see her grandmother and a friends mom on top of sending cards to and calling our moms).

And, you know what, those Skit Guys are at it again! You may remember that last year I posted one of their videos. (If not, here it is!)

I am not ashamed to admit that I teared up with this one (again), first from laughter (such as at 2:42 when one of the dad’s is trying to get his little girl off of the impossibly tall building!) and then from the sheer beauty of the sentiment.

Enjoy these “Mom Goggles”.

Happy Mothers’ Day, moms (and surrogate moms, including you dads who have to pull double-duty)!

Remember to find wisdom at Proverbial Thought!

Why does John 3:16 say “God so loved the world” and 1 John 4:8 “God is love”?

Probably because God loves each and every person. Through Jesus’ death on the cross, God has told each and every one of us, “I love you!”

my God said to me

my God said to me

I love you

I want you

I will be there for you

I will sit with you

I will cry with you

I will laugh with you

I will talk with you

I will listen to you

I will love you

If you love me

If you do not

  But I love you

my God said to me

that He wants to be

your God

too

My Lighthouse

Rend Collective

In my wrestling and in my doubts
In my failures You won’t walk out
You’re great love will lead me through
You are the peace in my troubled sea
You are the peace in my troubled sea

In the silence You won’t let go
In the questions Your truth will hold
Your great love will lead me through
You are the peace in my troubled sea
You are the peace in my troubled sea

My lighthouse
My lighthouse
Shining in the darkness I will follow You

My lighthouse
My lighthouse
I will trust the promise
You will carry me safe to shore
Safe to shore

I won’t fear what tomorrow brings
With each morning I’ll rise and sing
My God’s love will lead me through
You are the peace in my troubled sea
You are the peace in my troubled sea

Fire before us You’re the brightest
You will lead us through the storms

Do not forget to catch some wisdom from Proverbial Thought!

This week I started working on a new Masters degree. It is my second, but I am also working on my first. It was an interesting series of events that led to this happening.

Most of those events I would not have expected, and some of them seemed like bad things from my perspective when they started. Now I can see how they were working me toward something.

As they say, God works in mysterious ways.

series of events

all sorts of events come up

a series of unfortunate events

or maybe of fortunate events

what if all of the unplanned

the things that seemingly hinder

were events to get you to stop

what if all of these random events

that you thought are bad are not

maybe God is trying to get to you

to stop for just one or two moments

maybe He just wants you to look at

who is around and just listen

perhaps God is trying to bless you

to put that person or situation

into your life to bring a blessing

or to bring back your full attention

when things seem to be going wrong

remember to always praise and give thanks

you never know if God is just moving

to bring heaven to our earthly plane

it is when we respond with love and faith

in times that seem too difficult

to prove that He alone is God

that we display what He is all about

Where Jesus Spends His Time Today

Seek the wisdom of God, and find a taste at Proverbial Thought!

This past Sunday much of the Christian world celebrated the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Interesting note: this past Wednesday was probably the actual anniversary of the event.)

Last week I mentioned where Jesus spent the Passover when most Jews (except His followers and some others, I am sure!) were celebrating their freedom to worship God. Come Sunday morning, He proved He was God when He was raised from the dead!

Happily ever after, right?

Close.

There is still more to the story:

In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.

And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, 11 and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”
Acts 1:1-11, ESV

The message this week is simple: our Lord is in heaven. Our Risen Savior has given us a hope for eternal life, and He sits at the right hand of the Father. He is in control!

AND HE IS COMING BACK AGAIN!

HE IS RISEN!

Find the true Wisdom of God, and perhaps He can be found through some of the writings at Proverbial Thought!

If you have not heard Michael W. Smith’s “Missing Person”, it is well worth listening to. It was one of the inspirations for this poem today. The other was my journey through 2007 as I rediscovered Jesus Christ after a couple of years of turning from Him.

May you be encouraged today on this annual celebration of our Lord’s resurrection!

that faith

that faith that i once had

where i believed all Your Word said

i trusted all that You had said

and my life was saved from death

but somehow Your Word was forgotten

i decided to embrace my old sin

as i continued into deeper sin

Our relationship worsened

i want that faith to be mine once more

to tell everyone i trust the Lord

that i would know His Living Word

and share that faith with the world

and yet i find i want more than that

that i could lead others down Your Path

and have good replace all the bad

that we would walk with our Heavenly Dad

i still want more with that faith

to lead in power to the only Way

and impact those i meet everyday

because i move on every word You say

that faith that leads me to You

that love that compels me to share Your Truth

that blood that cleaned me through and through

that grace that redeems my eternal soul

that faith that i want today is

that faith that trusts my Lord Jesus

that faith first displayed by Jesus

that faith He wants for all of us

that faith i pray will push me

to follow my Savior completely

to share His Power and peace

to show everyone the Love that fills me

Where Jesus Spent the Passover

Here is another friendly reminder that Proverbial Thought is back! Also do not forget the first book published by Parson’s Porch!

Today is the Jewish Passover. It is a time of celebration of the freedom from slavery and living in the Promised Land.

There have been several times in history when it was merely a celebration of freedom from slavery in Egypt, and that was all because the Hebrew people could not live in their land.

Sadly, it took the mass murder of about six million (6,000,000) of them in World War II for them to get their land back. They also have not had all of the land restored to them.

However, about 2000 years ago there was a similar story. The Jews lived in the land, but they were under the rule of Rome. They were allowed to worship as they wanted, but it was always under the supervision of Roman leaders.

This is the same time that Jesus was born, raised, and performed His ministry. When He was about 33 years old, He went to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover with His closest disciples.

The night before Passover officially began, He was betrayed by one of His friends, arrested by the Jewish leadership, interrogated and beaten, denied by another of His friends, and then at the time the sacrificial lambs were being sacrificed He was beaten some more and nailed to a cross to die.

Thus, He became the sacrificial Lamb who washed away our sin that separated us from God.

Just before nightfall, which is when the Passover would officially begin, this is what we read in Mark 15 (ESV):

42 And when evening had come, since it was the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath, 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 44 Pilate was surprised to hear that he should have already died. And summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he was already dead. 45 And when he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he granted the corpse to Joseph. 46 And Joseph bought a linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud and laid him in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock. And he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. 47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.

Therefore, the Savior of the world, Jesus of Nazareth, the Jewish Messiah (Christ), spent Passover lying dead in a tomb.

We may not always feel like celebrating. The disciples certainly did not that weekend about 2000 years ago.

Yet, when our faith and hope is found in Christ that the Father is in control, we can have peace through the Holy Spirit knowing something the disciples did not that bleak Sabbath day, found in the next chapter of Mark:

1 When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. And they were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?” And looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled back—it was very large. And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe, and they were alarmed. And he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here.

Our God and Savior is ALIVE! HE IS RISEN!

We celebrate this week the resurrection of Jesus Christ. We have hope because He has overcome death and the grave!
