Do not forget to check out David’s commentary today over at Proverbial Thought!

In the middle of the hottest months of the year, I offer a humble look at what our Lord has done for us.

I do not pretend to understand why God loves us so much. I only know that He does and proved it through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ!

Why Us?

Would You look at us.
We are unscrupulous,
We are blasphemous,
All too often callous,
Living lives that are unjust,
Sending each other back to the dust.
For these reasons You sent Jesus.
Why do You love us?
Though we’re dangerous
And live perilous,
Your love is vigorous,
Your will ingenious,
Working with the tedious
To make us prosperous.
Though we are ruthless,
And we are vicious,
Your mind is tireless,
Your arm knows no weakness.
Your will ferocious
With loving kindness
Seeking the baseless
And the soulless,
The overly ambitious,
And the barbarous,
Spiritually delirious,
Of these You’re envious.
You come after us,
Show us You’re glorious,
For our attention, jealous.
Your actions are momentous,
Your love miraculous
Also continuous,
Informing the oblivious
And taming the ludicrous.
You change the obvious
Into the outrageous,
Make the serendipitous
Part of Your purpose.
You are so splendiferous
Taking the rebellious
And reigning victorious!

A simple one is all I have for today, and do not forget Proverbial Thought!. Today’s poem is a message of hope and encouragement from our Lord and God.

Do not be deceived, my child.

All that happens in this world
That is bad is not of my will.

I can make it all work for my plan,
And I do, but it is not of me.

Turn to me and I will help you.

Do not forget Proverbial Thought!

In May of 2007, a friend and I had a ministry we dubbed “Drunk Bus”. We would drive around our little college town on weekend nights from 11:00 pm until 2:00-3:00 am picking up partiers and club-goers, pub-crawlers and night-on-the-towners, and general drinkers and drunks. All we offered was a ride home. Only if people asked would we share that we did it because God first loved us, so we love them enough to give them rides (1 John 4:19).

We saw some lives cleaned up and others turned to our Lord!

I also wrote this poem on one of those nights.

Drunk’s poem

Nightly selling their souls.
Don’t they have anywhere else to go?
Drowning their emotions away
Thinking they are truly happy.
Why can they not see the truth?
Why do they waste away their youth?
Moving around from place to place
Not realizing how off base
Their actions really are.
Salvation cannot be found in a bar.
Don’t they know there’s more to life than this?
Don’t they know their wanderings are pointless?
God, open their eyes up to real life.
Help them see Your glorious light.
Show them life can mean so much more.
Move them into a better future.

Do not forget to check out Proverbial Thought everyday!

Monsoon season for Arizona started a few weeks ago (while my lovely wife and I were in Illinois), but there has been very little rain to date. We even have been hearing about many wildfires that have destroyed thousands of acres of land, hundreds of homes, and made life all around miserable for many people.

We are also taking our youth group to Colorado Springs for the Desperation Youth Conference.

We all can desperately stand to have more of God and His blessings.

Therefore, the poem for today is also a prayer for the Southwest region of the United States (and other places). It is a prayer for our youth. It is a prayer for all people.

Let it rain
Let it rain
Let Your power come
Let Your will be done
Let Your love flow on
Manifest Your Kingdom

Let it rain
Let it rain
Let Your glory fall
Let our souls stand tall
Make all Your people
Something beautiful

Let it rain
Let it rain
Let Your Spirit move
Let the earth see You
Let people come to
The King of the Jews

Let it rain
Let it rain
Let me see Your face
Let me offer praise
Let my spirit say
Jesus is the Way

I wanted to post a poem this week about independence or dependence or something, but as I have stated before I am making my way chronologically through my second book of poetry.

I did have some choice in the selection, so I thought it fitting that since we just came out of “Marriage Month” to use this poem.

I wrote this several months before I even met my lovely bride, but when in the presence of the Lord it is possible to understand so many things.

Bridegroom Love

When I begin to come into the presence of the Lord
I am a wreck.
Just knowing I am inviting Him to come
I am coming alive.
My stomach wrenches.
My heart leaps.
My body quivers.

When I begin to come into the presence of the Lord
I feel like a bridegroom.
I am a wreck.
As the bridegroom sees his bride coming down the aisle
He comes alive.
His stomach wrenches.
His heart leaps.
His body quivers.

When I begin to come into the presence of the Lord
I understand.
Christ is a bridegroom waiting on His bride.
As believers come alive
(I am sure)
His stomach wrenches.
His heart leaps.
His body quivers.
He sees His bride.

Happy Sunday!

Seeing as half the Sundays this month were celebrating something on this blog, why not celebrate another day in which we celebrate our risen Lord! The life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ changed everything for this world and countless lives.

That is the real key: changed lives.

May we have a real heart for those who are lost, and we may we never lose focus that it is God who changes people – not us.

a changing devotion

God,
I tried to change those around me
Nothing ever seemed to work out
Now I know what it is I need
First You need to change me
I need to let You inside of me
After I am changed because of You
I will live out the new change
Then those I hurt for will change.

HAPPY FATHERS’ DAY, all you daddies out there!

Be strong for your families, whether it be biological, sociological, ecclesiastical (church), and/or through work.

Like last week’s post, today’s poem relates to the day being celebrated. If you can show me a father who has not struggled with God in some way, I would truly be amazed.

May we all hold out for God’s blessing.

Israel (Struggles with God)

I am Israel
I do not always like what God tells me
I do not always want to listen
I struggle with His commands
I ask for a way out
I look for other options
I plead with God for another path
I also accept His Word
I know it is good
I argue with God
I know He will bless me
I will keep going until He does
I am Israel

For starters, I must say:

HAPPY 29TH ANNIVERSARY, MOM AND POPS!

My parents have been through quite a bit in their lives together. There have been times of joy and happiness, but there have also been times of pain and struggling. Most married people will tell you this is true for them.

So it is fitting to have the poem for today:

struggling through

i want to serve God
but it is so hard
this life call i have
seems like way too much

Your strength is needed
throughout every day
help me to serve You
my days seem so tough

i am getting through
God the Father helps
His grace is enough
and i feel His Love

Here is a friendly reminder to head over to check out Proverbial Thought and Pastor Baker’s amazing post today!

Have you ever been confronted with strange circumstances, you might even say they were attacks? Not necessarily from people so much as circumstances that seem too coordinated to be random.

I remember when my parents had started attending church, and, in 2001, less than a year later, things just seemed to be going a little crazy. They climbed into the minivan in the middle of all of this, and my dad sat on his cell phone making a long “beeeeeeeeep” sound. He pulled it out of its case, and he read on the display “666”. My parents decided to rebuke Satan in that moment: “Satan, just leave us alone!”

Things actually got better!

It was not because they told Satan to go away. It was their faith in Jesus Christ. That is the clincher.

I tell you all of that as the introduction to today’s poem. It was written after I read about Jesus’ rebuke of Peter in Matthew 16 and Mark 8 to “Get behind me, Satan!”

I bind you, Satan!
Get away from me!
I am no longer yours,
But belong to God.
Your power over me
Is gone from you.
I submit to God
And flee away from you.
I trample over you!
I cast you aside!
Attack me if you will,
But my God protects!
You were defeated!
The cross set me free!
Through Jesus’ blood
You lost control!
So, back off!
Get behind me!

The Bible is full of events in which angels fight, celebrate, mourn, and proclaim (perhaps even sing). Today’s poem is about one of those moments when … not much happened … while the greatest miracle in history was happening.

When Heaven Was Silent

Throughout time

God has spoken

Angels celebrated

Or they mourned

New believers

Brought them joy

Satan winning

Made them cry

There was a time

They were silent

All forgiven

One Man spent

This one Man

Was the reason

He is the one

To silence Heaven

For this Man

Gave His life

And in the moment

That He died

There was no noise

To be made

During the time

Our debts were paid

This was respect

Shown for Him

The only time it was

Silent in Heaven
