Give Me 5: The Five Solas

Yep. I missed last week. We had family in town, and I never had a long enough, quiet enough stretch of time by myself to record a video. Here is a new one, though! Here is the new Give Me 5:

Out of the Reformation of the 1500’s came what we call “The Five Solas or Solae”, but what do they mean?

The Five Solas

The Reformation started as a call to return to a simple faith not dogged down by man-made or superfluous rules and dogmas. (This is not the time for a debate about Catholic versus Protestant and denominational separation.)

It does lead to our first sola: Sola Scriptura – Scripture alone. Basically, this means that all of our traditions and understanding about God, Jesus, and humanity should be based on what the Bible says. There is value in traditions, the various councils, and books/teachings, but they must conform with what Scripture – as a whole – teaches.

This includes the matter of salvation, covered in the next solar: Sola Gratia, Sola Fide, Solus Christus, Soli Deo Gloria – By grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, to the glory of God alone.

This was summarized by Paul in Ephesians chapter two, when he said,

But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
(vv. 4-9, ESV)

We still need to confess our sins – primarily to God, but also to each other (James 5:16).

We still do works – but as an act of obedience and love for the One who saves us (2 Corinthians 5:14-15).

But it is only by grace through faith in the work Christ to the the glory of the Father as revealed in Scripture that we are saved.

Now, this is only a brief overview. We can continue to discuss this in the comments or through e-mail at Together@asimplemanofgod.com, or even on our Facebook page, a simple man of God. I am sure more videos and articles will be made discussing these.

VerseD: Psalm 2:11

Worship the Lord with reverence And rejoice with trembling.
Psalm 2:11, NASB

God is so much more powerful than we could ever imagine, and holier than we could ever understand.

Realize how your sin has affected your relationship with Him, and you will tremble before Him. Realize how His grace has saved you, and you will ever remain in awe of Him.

VerseD: Isaiah 55:6-7

Seek the Lord while He may be found; Call upon Him while He is near. Let the wicked forsake his way And the unrighteous man his thoughts; And let him return to the Lord , And He will have compassion on him, And to our God, For He will abundantly pardon.
Isaiah 55:6‭-‬7, NASB

Death is end of chances to seek God. He can be found during this life only. After death, He finds you, but not for salvation. Only His wrath remains.

Instead, turn to Him today, and forsake your selfish desires and thoughts to receive God’s compassion and grace.

VerseD: Psalm 90:12

So teach us to number our days, That we may present to You a heart of wisdom.
Psalm 90:12, NASB

While I have used this to justify birthdays, the greater meaning is that we should remember our lives are short, but we should remember how much God does for us in our lives.

VerseD: Luke 6:38

“give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”
Luke 6:38 ESV

God’s grace and joy will flow over you as you forgive, show grace, and generally love on others.

VerseD: Ephesians 2:8-9

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Ephesians 2:8‭-‬9, ESV

Stop trying to earn your salvation. It is an undeserved gift given freely to those who believe in the saving work of Christ through the cross.

Just believe it.

(Then do good works out of love.)

VerseD: Luke 6:37

“Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven;
Luke 6:37, ESV

This is not a command against judging others. Jesus is telling us to use wise judgment, grounded in God’s Word, and to show grace and forgiveness while calling out sin, but also to be open to sin in our own life being called out.

VerseD: Psalm 9:1

I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.
Psalm 9:1, ESV

God has done amazing things.

If you are saved by grace, give Him thanks and share it with the world!

Is there any more reason more worthy of thankfulness than this?

VerseD: 2 Corinthians 9:15

Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift!
2 Corinthians 9:15, ESV

God’s gift of grace has cleansed us, made us new, and invited us back into fellowship with the Creator of all things!

Remember to tha k Him, today and every day.

VerseD: 2 Corinthians 12:9

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
2 Corinthians 12:9 ESV

If only we better understood God’s grace and power, we would be unstoppable in changing this world.

Live a weak life. Good will move through you better.
