VerseD: James 1:19

Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger

James 1:19, ESV

Do not assume you know what a person is thinking or where they are coming from. Everyone is more willing to talk when we are willing to hear.

Just as God hears His people, even though He sees our sin.

VerseD: Matthew 6:19

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal”

Matthew 6:19, ESV

Money and things are not bad, but they can distract us from the One who blesses us with those things.

Trust in God alone who can and does meet our needs.

VerseD: Psalm 23:6

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Psalm 23:6, ESV

Our God has shown us so much mercy and grace through the cross, and now we await eternity in His presence.

VerseD: Isaiah 64:8

But now, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand.

Isaiah 64:8, ESV

Knowing that God is our Creator and the one who molds us should give us confidence that He knows what is best and how to guide our lives.

Sermon: Mark 15:16-32 – Missing the Point

I did NOT preach again, but my friend and fellow elder Bill did preach.

Mark 15:16-32, ESV

And the soldiers led him away inside the palace (that is, the governor’s headquarters), and they called together the whole battalion. And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him. And they began to salute him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they were striking his head with a reed and spitting on him and kneeling down in homage to him. And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they led him out to crucify him.

And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull). And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. And they crucified him and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take. And it was the third hour when they crucified him. And the inscription of the charge against him read, “The King of the Jews.” And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left. And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself, and come down from the cross!” So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, “He saved others; he cannot save himself. Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe.” Those who were crucified with him also reviled him.

VerseD: 2 Peter 3:9

The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.

2 Peter 3:9, ESV

We have seen that God keeps His promises. While we yearn for others to come to Christ, we can rest in the knowledge that He waited long enough for us to know Him.

VerseD: Proverbs 4:23

Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.

Proverbs 4:23, ESV

Our hearts are deceitful and wicked, so only the Lord of Life can cleanse us. Therefore, protect it by trusting in our God and Savior.

VerseD: Revelation 5:13

And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!”

We can get distracted and dismayed by this world, but we know that even rocks will cry out for God’s glory, let alone the loving things.

If Creation itself can trust Him, so can we.

Be not quick in your spirit to become angry, for anger lodges in the heart of fools.

It is easy to get upset with this world, but it helps to remember “they know not what they do.”

Be better than this world, having the grace and patience of our Lord.

A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

We fight and divide, but God stepped down to reconcile us and call us friends and adopted brothers in Christ.
