The New Year

We are now only one day away from New Years Eve, and now is the time to get alone somewhere and be honest with yourself and God about this past years failures and successes. When talking about failures and successes, I am primarily referring to relational failures and successes. Not necessarily romantic relationships, but simply how you relate to, and love your fellow man.

As Christians, we know that we’ll never be perfect in this life, but that does not mean that we shouldn’t try to become better people. Ask yourself this question: “Am I more like Jesus today than I was last year?” If your honest answer is “yes” then congratulations! You have grown this past year into a better person. But if your answer is “no” or even “I’m not sure,” then let it be a warning sign to you that you might be headed for a stagnant, lukewarm lifestyle.

However, no matter what your answer is, we all need to continue our personal growth. Here are some tips to help you evaluate where you are and where you’d like to be next year:

  1. Look at your relational failures this past year and figure out what you might have done differently. Did you help others grow? Did you feed the hungry? Did you prioritize people over things?
  2. Make a note about how you want to act and what you want to do this coming new year.
  3. Look at your relational successes from this past year. Let these encourage you but also ask yourself “was it enough?” “what can be maintained or improved?”

You see, we live in a dark culture that is consumed with materialism. But the light of Christ shines through the compassion, generosity and kindness of those who practice loving people instead of loving “things.” That is why it is so important for us to grow and become more like Jesus, so that this dark world will see His light and have hope.

You are the light of Jesus, and you will burn brighter the closer you get to Him.

Happy New Year!

About Jesse Walker

VerseD: 1 John 2:6

whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.
1 John 2:6, ESV

How did Jesus walk?

He was a servant, was a teacher and defender of God’s Word, and gave sacrificially to the point of death, and all through the power of the Holy Spirit to the glory of the Father.

How are we to live?

The same way.

VerseD: Colossians 1:16

For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.
Colossians 1:16, ESV

Material, spiritual, physical, metaphysical, galactic, microscopic and below and in between and beyond – everything was made through and for Christ.

Including us.

Our purpose in life is to glorify the Creator.

VerseD: Matthew 4:4

But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'”
Matthew 4:4, ESV

God’s Word is beneficial for every area of life, most importantly for growing in holiness unto salvation.

VerseD: Zechariah 8:3

This is what the Lord says: “I will return to Zion and dwell in Jerusalem. Then Jerusalem will be called the Faithful City, and the mountain of the Lord Almighty will be called the Holy Mountain.”
Zechariah 8:3, NIV

The Lord has come, through the incarnation of Christ, and He shall return once more to finally completely usher in His eternal Kingdom.

Merry Christmas! He Is Coming!

Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? Who hath gathered the wind in his fists? Who hath bound the waters in a garment? Who hath established all the ends of the earth? What [is] his name, and what [is] his son’s name, if thou canst tell?
Proverbs 30:4

And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
Luke 2:9-11

And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as…

VerseD: Luke 2:13-14

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”
Luke 2:13‭-‬14, ESV

Some teach angelic beings do not sing, or at least not anymore, since The Fall.

Is it too much to think they may have at the birth of the Son of God?

Regardless, they worship Jesus. May we join with them!

Happy Decemberween!

I would have worded some things differently, but … yeah.
Merry Tuesday. And Christmas.

My goal today is not to tell you what to think, but merely to encourage you to think about what you think, and to think consistently about it. And by “it,” I mean them, and by “them” I mean Christmas and Halloween- although this has lots of applications. It’s like duct tape or bacon.

Every Halloween we hear that we should NOT celebrate Halloween for one of two reasons:

  1. It has roots in evil paganism, and so, even though the majority of us have no idea what that means or what used to be done in its name (And whatever it was, it was certainly not dressing up small children as licenced movie characters and going door to door asking for candy from friends and neighbors) it’s an evil pagan holiday.
  2. Evil Pagans today do evil pagan things on that day, and non pagans do sinful things on that…

His Son’s Name Is…

Anthony Baker's avatarProverbial Thought

First of all, I would like to thank Daniel Klem for his posts on Advent. They were a blessing and obviously much appreciated.

Secondly, for all of you who have been regular followers of this blog over the years, thank you for reading and praying for all involved.

But to the main point, tomorrow we celebrate the birth of someone who was not only spoke of extensively in the New Testament, but also in the Proverbs.

As a matter of fact, in the next to the last chapter, one of two that are attributed to people other than Solomon, a wise man named Agur asked a very profound question (or several in one):

Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? Who hath gathered the wind in his fists? Who hath bound the waters in a garment? Who hath established all the ends of the earth? What [is] his…

VerseD: Isaiah 7:14

Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
Isaiah 7:14, ESV

Science may say it is possible that a woman could possibly conceive without a man, but how many times has it ever happened?

Just once. With genetics different from Mary (as evidenced by His being male), so that we may know God did this.
