VerseD: Isaiah 9:2

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.
Isaiah 9:2, ESV

Our minds are darkened by sin, our world full of evil and rebellion.
Yet, God came to us in the person of Jesus Christ, our source of cleansing and forgiveness, the Light of the world who reveals the Father, to those who believe.

VerseD: Luke 12:40

“You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”
Luke 12:40, ESV

Jesus can return at any moment. This should give us a sense of urgency to proclaim the Gospel and of hope in the end of suffering and evil.

VerseD: John 8:12

Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
John 8:12, ESV

In this life of darkness and fear, we can be comforted by believing in the Light of the world who has overcome the darkness.

VerseD: Galatians 6:2

Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
Galatians 6:2, ESV

Christ has given us His Holy Spirit to comfort us and help us, and He gave us His Body, the Church, to support us and share all things, whether material, emotional, or spiritual.

VerseD: Psalm 126:5

Those who sow in tears shall reap with shouts of joy!
Psalm 126:5, ESV

In Christ we find all our healing, comfort, forgiveness, and joy.
And hope.

VerseD: Romans 12:12

Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.
Romans 12:12, ESV

As our Lord prayed, so should we.
As our Lord showed patience under ridicule and pain, so should we.
Since our Lord is risen, we hope in His return.

VerseD: Romans 15:4

For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
Romans 15:4, ESV

Our Old Testament pointed toward Christ – it shows how we should live, that we utterly fail to live up to God’s standard, and that He made a way for us to be pure through the cross.

VerseD: Mark 1:2-4

As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, “Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way, the voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight,’” John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
Mark 1:2‭-‬4, ESV

Just as John got people ready for the ministry of Jesus by teaching repentance, we should be getting people ready for the return of Christ.
