What Are Your Expectations?

You can expect some solid teaching from Anthony today. What is a good expectation?

Proverbs 11:23

“The desire of the righteous is only good: but the expectation of the wicked is wrath.”

Righteous People

When we think of the term “righteous,” think of someone who is fair and just, for that is what the word entails. We’re not necessarily talking about a pious saint, or something, but a decent, God-fearing man or woman.

What are the characteristics of this type of person? The proverb says they “desire…only good.”

Now, some interpret this verse in such a way as to say, “The godly can look forward to a reward,” as in the New Living Translation. The ESV says that the desire of the righteous “ends only in good.” But I think it is better to interpret this verse as saying, “The object of the desire of the righteous is good.”

Righteous people are good people; they want good things to happen. And usually, because of their…

VerseD: Galatians 5:1

For freedom, Christ set us free. Stand firm then and don’t submit again to a yoke of slavery.
Galatians 5:1, CSB

Sin binds us and drives us into the ground (figuratively and literally, to death).

Christ has freed us by His blood from this, to be able to freely choose to love Him.

VerseD: Hebrews 12:14

Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.
Hebrews 12:14, ESV

We should neither be contentious nor rude. However, we seek truth and to share truth. The Truth is Christ, through whom we have salvation, and He offends those set on sin.

Are You Glad?

VerseD: Exodus 20:16

“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.”
Exodus 20:16, CSB

Lying about or to someone, failing to defend someone, and falsely reassuring someone (such as saying to a non-Christian everything will be okay …) is slapping the image of God within them in the face.

Lying to a person is attempting to lie to the God of Truth.

It comes down the fossil evidence …

A loyal reader wrote in on an article I wrote called:

Darwin Did Not Believe Evolution

First he quotes me from my article saying;

“He[Darwin] knew that the fossils did not contain the transitional forms his theory anticipated. This was also in his book. He expressed hope that SOMEDAY the fossils would reveal some transitional forms, but he admitted that, as of his lifetime, they had not.

150 years later, they still have not.”

And then he replied by saying;

Those transitional fossils have now been found. Birds, wales and horses all have obvious roots, interim forms and their ancestors are documented in fossils. The other point about primitive eyes have also been well documented in living as well as the fossil record.

Sorry Loyal Reader, but it’s simply not true.

VerseD: Proverbs 17:17

A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a difficult time.
Proverbs 17:17, CSB

Christ again is our example: be a friend to all people, loving through all areas of life; be a brother to all, especially other Christians, sacrificing of yourself in times of need.

VerseD: Luke 6:36

Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.
Luke 6:36, ESV

Just as God showed us mercy for all the ways we sin against Him, remember that people are messed up and mess up all the time, and show them mercy and grace. You would like them to do it for you.

VerseD: Hebrews 12:11

For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
Hebrews 12:11, ESV

When circumstances are tough, it is probably not punishment so much as a time to learn and grow. Your sin (even someone else’s) may lead to it, but use the time to grow closer to God.

VerseD: Romans 8:26

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.
Romans 8:26, ESV

When life is so hard, so scary, and so wearying that we barely know how to think straight, God helps us talk with Him.

If you find it hard to pray, either sit quietly, inviting Him to speak, or let it all out at Him. He can take it. He will help you.
