Hopefully making theology simpler to understand! (2 Corinthians 1:12)

Once upon a time all feelings and emotions went to a coastal island for a vacation. According to their nature, each was having a good time. Suddenly, a warning of an impending storm was announced and everyone was advised to evacuate the island.

The announcement caused sudden panic. All rushed to their boats. Even damaged boats were quickly repaired and commissioned for duty.

Yet, Love did not wish to flee quickly. There was so much to do. But as the clouds darkened, Love realised it was time to leave. Alas, there were no boats to spare. Love looked around with hope.

Just then Prosperity passed by in a luxurious boat. Love shouted, “Prosperity, could you please take me in your boat?”

“No,” replied Prosperity, “my boat is full of precious possessions, gold and silver. There is no place for you.”

A little later Vanity came by in a beautiful boat…

We are going to win as we heal our broken families.  Hearts of the fathers turn to their children (that is how the Old Testament ends) and the hearts of the children return to their fathers (that is how the New Testament begins).

Men, we can do better. Few fathers are leading their wives and children to read the Bible, few extend their hands around the table to pray, to pray for their protection, to bless, to read aloud a good book, to discuss the great ideas. Many fathers are embarrassed to lead in their homes, and an embarrassed man feels ashamed. How few men in our day saw their father model leadership in the home. How few men feel that they learned anything from their father. But this must stop here, with us. You men can turn this around now. “As for me and my house, we will serve…

On Friday 26 October 1973 my father dropped me at Heathrow Airport and I flew to Sweden to join my first ship. My parents had to wait for a letter to confirm that their sixteen-year old son had arrived safely. That probably took about a week to arrive. Today I would just send a text, or an email, or use my mobile phone to call home. But writing letters and waiting for a reply was normal before the advent of modern communications.

I can’t believe it has actually been a year since this blog first went live. One year ago, on April Fool’s Day, Proverbial Thought set out to share a little bit of God’s wisdom with the world.

As I thought about this day, the famous words of the martyred missionary, Jim Elliot, came to mind:

“He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose.”

The greatest fool is the man who attempts to gain the whole world, but then loses his soul (Mark 8:36).
