Bible Contradiction? Did Jesus Claim That No One Has Ever Gone to Heaven?

It’s a fairly common online assertion that the Bible is “fuLL oF cOnTraDicTioNs!” by those who are unfamiliar with the common mistakes that skeptics make when they make such claims. In a recent online discussion, a God-denier claimed that that Bible was full of contradictions. The principle assertion of contradiction was that Elijah ascended into Heaven (2 Kings 2:11) but Jesus claimed in John 3:13 that no one but the Son has ever ascended into Heaven

Before I begin the rebuttal, let the reader understand that God-deniers have no grounds for declaring anything to be contradictory. We want to do our own thing, but God draws is into His will and plan by His Holy Spirit indwelling and guiding us.

So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

God works through His people to work out His plan of salvation. We join in His work by proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ and trust the Holy Spirit to work in others.

God’s plan is restoration of His very good work, starting with this of us who believe in the life, atoning death, and resurrection of Christ – we are adopted in Christ as heirs of eternal life.

God knows what He is doing, and He invites us into His plan through His Son. We should have no reason to fear, knowing we are His in Christ.

God has a plan, and we join that plan in Christ. We let His purpose become our purpose, sacrificing our desires as He transforms us into the likeness of the Son.

God is not surprised by anything, so we can trust that we are safe in His hands, no matter what happens in life.

God’s goodness and love is shown through the forgiveness of sins, paid once for all by Christ on the cross.

God wants to give us good things, most of all: wisdom and the forgiveness of sins through Jesus Christ. All we need do is ask.

Knowing that God’s wrath and eternal power is revealed in all nature should push us to repentance and help us to truly understand our world.
