This Sunday at Church: Go to Church Early

I get to church early because I am on staff and have set up duties and an Adult Sunday School class I lead.
But our church also has a prayer group at that time. And there is more set up that is needed.
There are great people to get to know better and encourage if we just show up a little earlier (or stay a little later and also help with tear down!)

VerseD: Jeremiah 29:13

You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.
Jeremiah 29:13, ESV

“When I have time …”

“After I do this …”

“I have so many other obligations …”

We wonder why we do not see God … when we refuse to make seeking Him a priority.

Make time for God every day.

Review – A Matter of Days – Chapter 1

Flash Point

Ch1In his first chapter, Dr. Ross describes a few encounters with biblical creationists where Dr. Ross felt insulted and identified with derogatory names. I have to agree with Dr. Ross in this area that Christians should not use derogatory names to define those with whom we disagree. As thinking Christians, we should instead be able to identify the specific areas of disagreement and then go to our authority (the Bible) to correct those Christians, who are in error. This is the primary purpose for this book review.

Some might point to my blog post from 9/8/17 where I referred to the disciples of Dr. Ross as Rossians and accuse me of being hypocritical for having written the above sentence. But in the same way that those who follow the teachings of John Calvin are called Calvinists, and those who uphold the teachings of Martin Luther are referred…

VerseD: Proverbs 16:3

Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.
Proverbs 16:3, ESV

Do not read this as “Make sure God is invoked in your work so that your plans work out.”

Start your plans by seeking God’s will, work diligently and faithfully with the help of God, and find success on God’s terms, not necessarily your own.

VerseD: Psalm 90:12

So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.
Psalm 90:12, ESV

This is not about remembering birthdays and anniversaries (though, that is not bad.)

Rather, we should aware of God’s power and Christ’s immanent return to bring justice and peace.

Review – A Matter of Days – Introduction

ApoloJedi's avatarApoloJedi

Dr. Ross begins his book by explaining part of the reason for his book:

Debates over the age of the universe and earth and the length of the Genesis creation days have-for the past several decades-deeply divided the evangelical Christian community…This impediment to Christian unity appears to be heightening into a storm of ferocious fury.

He is correct here. He is attempting in his book to provide a rebuttal to those who hold a young earth position, so that the “unity” for which he longs is really the eradication of the ideas of the other side. There is significant division on this point, but he seems not to understand the totality of the division when he writes,

What could generate such tension and divisiveness? One simple word: ‘day’.

While the word day is the catalyst for such division, the totality of the argument is better understood to be ‘biblical interpretation.’…

Book Review: A Matter of Days 2nd Edition by Hugh Ross

ApoloJedi's avatarApoloJedi

Writing a book is indeed a huge and trying undertaking. Reviewing a book is, by comparison, far easier and is rather painless. So, I will begin my review of A Matter of Days by Dr. Hugh Ross by recognizing the tremendous effort and time that he and his staff put into publishing a high quality book.

For those interested in the topic of biblical creation, theology, origins, science, and biblical interpretation, you will probably appreciate the book. It is 389 pages long including the appendices, notes, index, and biography. It contains 23 chapters.

The overall theme of the book is Dr. Ross building a case for old earthism in contrast to young earth creationism (henceforth to be referred to as biblical creation).

My plan for this review is to take each chapter as a separate blog post and keep track of the entire review in a “table of contents” format…

VerseD: Proverbs 16:9

The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.
Proverbs 16:9, ESV

God is in control. It is better to follow His way than our own.

Seek God’s will in everything in your life.

VerseD: Ecclesiastes 3:11

He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.
Ecclesiastes 3:11, ESV

We appreciate beauty, for God has made beautiful things. He also gave us a desire for perfection and eternity, but it can only be attained through Christ, our hope and beautiful Savior.

Happy New Year 2020!

So, a lot happened this year.

We will avoid the political stuff for now, some the results of television and cinema drama, and much of the sadness, stupidness, and crazy.

On some positive notes, my wife started her Masters degree and should be done in five months!

Our friend started his Doctorate, and he and his wife had their adorable daughter.

I began working for my friend at Third Shot Coffee. That is pretty cool. I have not given up on my own dreams, either, but they are not at the forefront at this time.

Oh. And we have a house of our own again!

But this next year should be … 2020.

In any event, may you receive an abundance of bunches of blessings this year. And though life may take some effort to trudge through, fall on the promises of God, this year and always.

The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.

Numbers 6:24‭-‬26 ESV

In His Love,

Daniel
