God’s mercy is clear when children grow up and follow what good they learned from their parents.
God’s grace is clear when those children grow up and follow Christ.
Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable.

The Holy Spirit helps give us self-control, for we know that to be like Christ is the greatest prize. Wouldn’t we want to be as much like our Creator and Savior as possible?

All of these are included in training up a child, and more.
The most important: to seek and love God.
