HAPPY NEW YEAR 2016!

I know I took quite a bit of time off this year. Perhaps this next year will be different, we shall see. To quote me from last year:

2015 was an interesting year. There are many things that happened that were good, many things that happened that were bad, and many things that fell in between.

The important thing to remember is that God is in control:

Remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose’
Isaiah 46:9-10, ESV

As I have said in the past, I say for the coming year,

The LORD bless you, and keep you; The LORD make His face shine on you, And be gracious to you; The LORD lift up His countenance on you, And give you peace.’ Numbers 6:24-26, NASB

Do not forget this year to get your daily wisdom from Proverbial Thought. Perhaps it will help get you into the Bible!

I would also like to include a reminder to be thankful, as offered by Mikeschair:

Peace and grace,

2015 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2015 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

A San Francisco cable car holds 60 people. This blog was viewed about 1,400 times in 2015. If it were a cable car, it would take about 23 trips to carry that many people.

Is Your Christianity a Sham?

Anthony Baker's avatarThe Recovering Legalist

Adorable Sin

It may come as a shock to some, but many who claim to be Christians are not, actually. It is obvious because of their unrepentant love of sin.

For example, I know a person who willfully admits his failures and flaws (which is a good thing), but happily continues to do the very things he knows are wrong. He says, “I know I have a problem with (blank), but I know I’ll never change, so I’ll just have to keep asking for forgiveness.” In reality, the problem is that he loves his sin, and therefore refuses to truly repent and “turn from his wicked ways.” His particular sin is his claim to fame, his identity. Without it, he wouldn’t be noticed.

Am I suggesting that Christians NEVER sin? Of course not! The Bible plainly tells us that if we say we never sin, “we deceive ourselves…

Shopping – Evidence We Need Jesus

Sometimes things at this time of the year can get a little cheesy. Anthony is actually really good at making things cheesy! However, I think this one is really good.

Last Minute

I will confess, in just a little while I will be going out to do some last-minute shopping. Yes, I know it’s going to be hectic and crazy out there, especially if any Black Lives Matter protesters plan on clogging our local mall. Nevertheless, the shopping has to be done.

Fortunately for me, I am not on a mission to buy a bunch of stuff for everyone on my list; all I need to do is find a couple of things for a couple of people, and that’s it. The only other things I may buy today are a cup of coffee and stamps (yes, there are going to be some late Christmas cards this year).

The Perfect Gift

But this whole shopping thing got me to thinking: will we ever find the “perfect” gift? So often people spend hours and hours navigating traffic, long lines, websites, and…

The Face of Terrorism in America?

Not only for his like and share season, but because he nails it am I sharing Anthony’s thoughts on this subject. Make sure to read his thoughts on this and many other things.

Colorado

You may have already heard about what happened in and around a Colorado Planned Parenthood facility. Three people were killed, including a police officer, by a shooter by the name of Robert Lewis Dear, age 57.

My heart is broken by the loss of life. Even though I believe abortion is the taking of an innocent life, I don’t condone attacking a Planned Parenthood office. If that was all Robert Dear was doing, then he had no justification for his actions. What he did was murder.

But right off the bat, even before the whole story had been released (and we still don’t know all the details as of yet), accusations started flying; talk of gun control ramped up once again; and anyone and everyone with a Facebook or Twitter account made their own two cents known.

Cue Montel Williams…

I don’t know what to think about Montel Williams…

Water on Mars – a Response

Good stuff here.

Daniel

Anthony Baker's avatarThe Recovering Legalist

OH NO! What Will We Do?

Recent word from NASA is that there is water on Mars, and that life on Earth probably came from there a long, long time ago – at least that’s the idea. I mean, it’s just too crazy to believe in a Creator, but life coming from non-life and then traveling through space in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, and secure domestic tranquility is perfectly plausible.

Just watch as Shepherd Smith on FOX News gets giggly as he and Corey Powell (Discover Magazine) mull over the thought that we all might be Martians.

Unfortunately, what is worrying some Christians (and getting atheists excited) is the idea that if life is found on Mars, then the veracity of the Bible will be called into question. In other words, why put your faith in Jesus Christ if the scientific community can find communities…

When Heaven Becomes Real

In 13 days (August 12), I reach a milestone of the same nature as Anthony. That will be one year since my mom went on to a closer walk with He. (Do you see what I did there?) I like his words here. You should, too.

Anthony Baker's avatarThe Recovering Legalist

My city has been in the news a lot because of the deaths of five brave servicemen. The last of the funerals was held yesterday.

I have been to a whole lot of funerals as a minister. Even when I was young I had to go to a lot of funerals because my dad was a preacher – and guess who performed all the funerals for family and friends? It seemed like every other week someone would call on my father to preach someone’s funeral, and most were people I did not know.

Unbelievably, however, there are a lot of people in this world (especially America) who have never had to deal with the loss of someone really close, like a parent, sibling, or spouse, not even a grandparent. There are a lot of adults who have never even been to a funeral. For them, as it was for me…

The Supreme Court Decided, Now So Must We

I was going to write something about the SCOTUS decision on marriage, but I will let Anthony take it from here!

Daniel

Anthony Baker's avatarThe Recovering Legalist

Folks, let’s be honest and get right to the point: all Hell is about to break loose upon the Christian church, its leadership, and anyone who dares hold on to the biblical definition of marriage. Make no mistake, demonic forces are gleefully frothing at the mouth, along with those they are influencing, at the buffet of litigious opportunity that has now been afforded them.

At this point you’ve no doubt hear the news: the Supreme Court has redefined marriage to be whatever makes a person happy, therefore making it a constitutionally protected right.

Because of today’s ruling, we will be seeing attacks on the Church and Christians from every conceivable angle. They will use today’s decision as the basis for ending tax-exemption, closing churches, and imprisoning ministers. The rainbowed sky is the limit.

Supporters of the new law will threaten and intimidate Christians in the workplace; deny benefits and contracts…

Truth from the Zoo

I greatly enjoy practical wisdom and seeing things come to life in our world as found in scripture. Thanks, Anthony, for the thoughts!

Conies

This morning I drove a school bus full of children from a summer camp to the Chattanooga zoo. While I was waiting on them, I took my Bible and a notebook inside where I could sit in the shade and study for my Sunday morning sermon…but first I had to take a look at a few of the animals (they’re so cuuuute!)

So, I went into a building that housed desert animals from around the world, and that’s where I saw a cute little fang-toothed critter straight out of the book of Proverbs – the coney.

“There be four [things which are] little upon the earth, but they [are] exceeding wise: … The conies [are but] a feeble folk, yet make they their houses in the rocks;” – Proverbs 30:24, 26

The conies are second in the list  “four (little) things” that are exceedingly wise. But what is a…
